    Gengmu Ruan1, Haibei Xiong1,*, Jiawei Chen1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 227-246, 2019, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2019.04743

Abstract In this paper, bending performance and rolling shear properties of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels made from Canadian hemlock were investigated by varied approaches. Firstly, three groups of bending tests of three-layer CLT panels with different spans were carried out. Different failure modes were obtained: bending failure, rolling shear failure, bonding line failure, local failure of the outer layer and mixed failure mode. Deflection and strain measurements were employed to calculate the global and local modulus of elastic (MOE), compared with the theoretical value. In addition, a modified compression shear testing method was introduced to evaluate More >

    Yana Wang1,2,3,4, Ruodi Jia1,5, Fengrui Liu1,5,6,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.120, No.1, pp. 215-234, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.06542

Abstract Delamination and matrix cracking are two common failure mechanisms in composite structures, and are usually coupled with each other, leading to multiple failures pattern. This paper proposed a fast damage prediction methodology for composite laminated structures based on the ply-by-ply 2D (two dimensional) FE model of composite laminates in the transverse plane. The layer-wise 2D FE model was firstly used in conjunction with the integrated XFEM/CE strategy, which simulated the interface delamination with cohesive elements and the intra-ply matrix crack with XFEM (extended finite element method). To realize ply-by-ply 2D FE (finite element) modeling of More >

A Non-Ordinary State-Based Peridynamic Formulation for Failure of Concrete Subjected to Impacting Loads

    Liwei Wu1, Dan Huang1,*, Yepeng Xu1, Lei Wang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.118, No.3, pp. 561-581, 2019, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2019.04347

Abstract Strain hardening and strain rate play an important role in dynamic deformation and failure problems such as high-velocity impact cases. In this paper, a non-ordinary state-based peridynamic model for failure and damage of concrete materials subjected to impacting condition is proposed, taking the advantages of both damage model and non-local peridynamic method. The Holmquist-Johnson-Cook (HJC) model describing the mechanical character and damage of concrete materials under large strain, high strain rate and high hydrostatic pressure was reformulated in the framework of non-ordinary state-based peridynamic theory, and the corresponding numerical approach was developed. The proposed model More >

Failure Prediction, Lead Time Estimation and Health Degree Assessment for Hard Disk Drives Using Voting Based Decision Trees

    Kamaljit Kaur1, *, Kuljit Kaur2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.60, No.3, pp. 913-946, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.07675

Abstract Hard Disk drives (HDDs) are an essential component of cloud computing and big data, responsible for storing humongous volumes of collected data. However, HDD failures pose a huge challenge to big data servers and cloud service providers. Every year, about 10% disk drives used in servers crash at least twice, lead to data loss, recovery cost and lower reliability. Recently, the researchers have used SMART parameters to develop various prediction techniques, however, these methods need to be improved for reliability and real-world usage due to the following factors: they lack the ability to consider the More >

GFCache: A Greedy Failure Cache Considering Failure Recency and Failure Frequency for an Erasure-Coded Storage System

    Mingzhu Deng1, Fang Liu2,*, Ming Zhao3, Zhiguang Chen2, Nong Xiao2,1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.1, pp. 153-167, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.03585

Abstract In the big data era, data unavailability, either temporary or permanent, becomes a normal occurrence on a daily basis. Unlike the permanent data failure, which is fixed through a background job, temporarily unavailable data is recovered on-the-fly to serve the ongoing read request. However, those newly revived data is discarded after serving the request, due to the assumption that data experiencing temporary failures could come back alive later. Such disposal of failure data prevents the sharing of failure information among clients, and leads to many unnecessary data recovery processes, (e.g. caused by either recurring unavailability… More >

Preoperative factors associated with failure in unstented primary ureteroscopy for nephrolithiasis

Patrick Whelan, Thomas Hwang, Christopher Coogan

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 9389-9394, 2018

Abstract Introduction: Primary ureteroscopy for nephrolithiasis is often completed without prior ureteral stenting. However, failure can occur due to inability to access the stone, requiring ureteral stenting for passive dilation and a second procedure. This typically results in increased morbidity due to a prolonged period of ureteral stenting and subsequent stent-related symptoms. Patient counseling preoperatively is important to discuss the risk of failure.
Materials and methods: We reviewed all primary ureteroscopies for nephrolithiasis performed by four urologists at our institution from November 2007 to November 2016. Univariate analysis was performed to compare groups with Chi-squared analysis, Fisher’s exact… More >

    Hongsheng Su1,2,∗, Shuangshuang Wang1, Dengfei Wang2

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.33, No.5, pp. 351-360, 2018, DOI:10.32604/csse.2018.33.351

Abstract To better solve the issue with abnormal failure of electric motor unit (EMU) brake pad resulted from various random factors in the ever-changing operating environment, in this paper, a new evaluation method of performance prediction and abnormity decision is proposed based on the Multivariate integrated random walk (MIRW) model. In this method, the state space model of the EMU brake pad performance degradation is firstly established. And then based on the observed data, the brake pad performance degradation trend is extracted by the fixed interval forward - backward smoothing algorithm. Based on it, the future… More >

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Based on Z-numbers

Wen Jiang, Chunhe Xie, Boya Wei, Yongchuan Tang

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.24, No.1, pp. 165-172, 2018, DOI:10.1080/10798587.2017.1327158

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to propose a new method for failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) based on Z-numbers. In the proposed method, firstly, Z-numbers are used to perform the valuations (Z-valuation) of the risk factors like occurrence (O), severity (S) and detection (D). Secondly, the Z-valuations of the risk factors are integrated by fuzzy weighted mean method. A new risk priority number named as ZRPN is calculated to prioritize failure modes based on a modified method of ranking fuzzy numbers. Finally, a case study for the rotor blades of an aircraft More >

    Doris P. Yimgang1, John D. Sorkin2, Charles F. Evans3, Danielle S. Abraham1, Geoffrey L. Rosenthal1,4

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.13, No.4, pp. 533-540, 2018, DOI:10.1111/chd.12622

Abstract Introduction: Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are commonly prescribed medications after the Norwood procedure. There are little data that can be used to determine if angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors improve interstage outcomes in children with single ventricle defects. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and interstage failure among infants born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative database (collected between 2008 and 2015). We used logistic regression models to assess the exposure-outcome associations and… More >
