Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Based on Z-numbers

Wen Jiang, Chunhe Xie, Boya Wei, Yongchuan Tang

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.24, No.1, pp. 165-172, 2018, DOI:10.1080/10798587.2017.1327158

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to propose a new method for failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) based on Z-numbers. In the proposed method, firstly, Z-numbers are used to perform the valuations (Z-valuation) of the risk factors like occurrence (O), severity (S) and detection (D). Secondly, the Z-valuations of the risk factors are integrated by fuzzy weighted mean method. A new risk priority number named as ZRPN is calculated to prioritize failure modes based on a modified method of ranking fuzzy numbers. Finally, a case study for the rotor blades of an aircraft turbine is performed to demonstrate… More >

    Xixiang Chen1, Yu Chen2, *, Kang He2, Fernando Palacios Galarza3

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 299-322, 2018, DOI: doi:10.32604/sdhm.2018.04625

Abstract In order to studythe web-crippling behavior of aluminum hollow section subjected toconcentrated load, sixteen aluminum hollow tubes withdifferent loading conditions, bearing lengthandweb slenderness ratioswere tested. This paperalso discusseda method to improve the web crippling strength of the aluminum hollow sections byinfilling the mortar as composite section, and four aluminum composite sections were tested. The literature has reported lots of web crippling tests, butthere isfew reportson web crippling behavior of aluminum composite sections. Interior-Ground(IG) and End-Ground(EG)loading conditions were adopted, with the specimens placed on the ground to simulate the load of floor joists. Specimens were also placed on a bearing plate… More >

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Cross-Laminated Timber with Different Lay-ups Using Japanese Larch

    Yingchun Gong1,#,*, Fenglu Liu2,#, Zhaopeng Tian1, Guofang Wu1, Haiqing Ren1, Cheng Guan2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.10, pp. 941-956, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07354

Abstract Japanese larch is one of the main plantation tree species in China. A lack of engineered wood products made by Japanese larch , limits its application in wood structures. In this study, based on optimum process para meters, such as pressure (1.2 MPa), adhesive spread rate (200 g/m 2 ) and adhesive (one component polyurethane), the mechanical properties of Japanese larch made cross laminated timber ( with different lay ups were evaluated by means of the static method . Results of this study show ed that variations in lay ups significant ly affected the mechanical properties of CLT. The strength… More >

Evaluation of the Out-of-Plane Shear Properties of Cross-Laminated Timber

    Yin Yang1, Xiaoyan Cao1, Zhiqiang Wang1,*, Zhijun Liang1, Jianhui Zhou2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.10, pp. 957-965, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07558

Abstract The out-of-plane shear properties of cross-laminated timber (CLT) substantially influence the overall mechanical properties of CLT. Various testing methods and theories related to these properties have recently been developed. The effects of the number of layers (three and five layers) and testing method (short-span three- and four-point bending tests) on the out-of-plane shear properties of CLT were evaluated. The out-of-plane shear strength values were calculated based on different theories for comparison. The failure mode in the short-span four-point bending (FPB) method was mainly the rolling shear (RS) failure in the cross layers, indicating that the FPB method was appropriate to… More >

Bending and Rolling Shear Properties of Cross-Laminated Timber Fabricated with Canadian Hemlock

    Gengmu Ruan1, Haibei Xiong1,*, Jiawei Chen1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 227-246, 2019, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2019.04743

Abstract In this paper, bending performance and rolling shear properties of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels made from Canadian hemlock were investigated by varied approaches. Firstly, three groups of bending tests of three-layer CLT panels with different spans were carried out. Different failure modes were obtained: bending failure, rolling shear failure, bonding line failure, local failure of the outer layer and mixed failure mode. Deflection and strain measurements were employed to calculate the global and local modulus of elastic (MOE), compared with the theoretical value. In addition, a modified compression shear testing method was introduced to evaluate the rolling shear strength and… More >

Improved Failure Mode Identification and Reliability Estimates for Electricity Transmission Towers

    Xuwen An1,2, Jianguo Hou3, P.D. Gosling4, Dong Dai5, Long Xiao6, Xiaoyi Zhou7

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.107, No.1, pp. 1-25, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.107.001

Abstract Studies on the theory of structural system reliability includes identification of main the failure modes and calculation of inclusive failure probabilities for the structural system. The efficient and accurate identification of failure modes in structural systems is difficult and represents a key focus for research in system reliability. The fundamental theory of the branch and bound algorithm for stage critical strength is reviewed in this paper. Some deficiencies in this method are highlighted. Corresponding approaches to overcome these deficiencies are proposed. Calculated system reliability solutions to the classical model, a truss with 10 elements, indicate that the improvement measures proposed… More >

A Multiscale Progressive Failure Modeling Methodology for Composites That Includes Fiber Strength Stochastics

    Trenton M. Ricks1, Thomas E. Lacy, Jr.1,2, Brett A. Bednarcyk3, Steven M.Arnold3, John W. Hutchins1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.40, No.2, pp. 99-130, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.040.099

Abstract A multiscale modeling methodology was developed for continuous fiber composites that incorporates a statistical distribution of fiber strengths into coupled multiscale micromechanics/ finite element (FE) analyses. A modified twoparameter Weibull cumulative distribution function, which accounts for the effect of fiber length on the probability of failure, was used to characterize the statistical distribution of fiber strengths. A parametric study using the NASA Micromechanics Analysis Code with the Generalized Method of Cells (MAC/GMC) was performed to assess the effect of variable fiber strengths on local composite failure within a repeating unit cell (RUC) and subsequent global failure. The NASA code FEAMAC… More >

Invariant Based Transversely-Isotropic Material and Failure Model for Fiber-Reinforced Polymers

    M. Vogler1, G. Ernst1, R. Rolfes1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 25-50, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.025

Abstract In this article, a constitutive formulation of a transversely-isotropic material and failure model for fiber-reinforced polymers is presented comprising pre-failure material nonlinearities, a novel invariant based quadratic failure criterion (IQC) as well as post failure material softening. The failure surface of the IQ criterion is assumed to take the influence of triaxiality on fracture into account. Further, a distinction between fiber failure and inter-fiber failure is conducted. Material softening is governed by a fracture energy formulation and the introduction of an internal length. The constitutive model is implemented into a programming user interface of the commercial finite element program Abaqus.… More >
