    Fei Han1,*, Zhibin Li1, Jianyu Zhang1, Zhiying Liu1, Chen Yao1, Wenping Han1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09023

Abstract The classical finite element method has been successfully applied to many engineering problems but not to cases with space discontinuity. A peridynamics-based finite element method (PeriFEM) is presented according to the principle of minimum potential energy, which enables discontinuity. First, the integral domain of peridynamics is reconstructed, and a new type of element called peridynamic element (PE) is defined. Although PEs are generated by the continuous elements (CEs) of classical FEM, they do not affect each other. Then, spatial discretization is performed based on PEs and CEs, and the linear equations about nodal displacement are… More >

A Double-Phase-Field Model for the Cohesive Failure Modelling in Laminated Composite Materials

    Haibo Su1, Liang Wang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09611

Abstract This work presents a novel double-phase-field formulation to characterize the distinct damage mechanisms and the mixed-mode cohesive fracture behaviors in fiber-reinforced composites (FRC). A hybrid phase field formulation is first proposed to derive the phase field and stress through distinct energy functionals. Then, the phase field degradation function and material damaged stiffness are properly defined based on the unique failure mechanisms, which enable the derivation of the embedded Hashin failure criteria for fiber and matrix failures in FRC respectively. Furthermore, the mixed-model cohesive law with linear softening is analytically derived within the phase field framework More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09107

Abstract This work proposes a novel multi-phase-field formulation to characterize the distinct damage mechanisms and quasi-brittle fracture behaviors in FRC. The phase field driving forces for each failure mechanisms are first defined based on an anisotropic energy split scheme. Then, the PF degradation functions pertinent to each failure mode are properly defined with corresponding material fracture quantities, which enables the derivation of embedded Hashin failure criteria for fiber- and matrix failures respectively. Furthermore, the material damaged stiffness is redefined within the anisotropic CDM framework, and a linear CZM is mathematically derived for each of the typical More >

An Efficient Solution Strategy for Phase Field Model of Dynamic Fracture Problems Based on Domain Decomposition

    Shourong Hao1, Yongxing Shen1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09336

Abstract Dynamic fracture is an important class of damage widely present in engineering materials and structures, e.g., high-speed impact and explosion. In recent years, the phase field approach to fracture proposed by Bourdin et al. [1] becomes popular for complicated fracture problems for its ability to simulate crack nucleation, propagation, branching, and merging without extra criteria, and the crack path does not need to be tracked, which makes the implementation straightforward and the calculation efficient. However, one of the major issues of the phase field method is the high computational cost due to the need of… More >

Energy Relations in the Phase Field Approach to Fracture

    Yongxing Shen1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09314

Abstract The phase field approach to fracture originates from the variational formulation of brittle fracture proposed by Francfort and Marigo. The regularized version of the latter formulation by Bourdin et al. is also dubbed the phase field approach to fracture. Compared with explicit crack methods such as the extended finite element method, the phase field approach to fracture does not require additional criteria for crack simulation and can naturally simulate complex fracture behaviors such as crack initiation, propagation, branching and merging with a fixed mesh and fixed shape functions. This work examines the energy relations in… More >

Multi-physics Simulation of Tar-Rich Coal in-situ Pyrolysis in the Fractured Porous Zone with Multi-Region Homogenization Treatment

    Qianhao Ye1, Mingjie Li1, Jingyuan Hao1, Zibo Huang1, Jinjia Wei1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.08826

Abstract The macroscopic tar-rich coal in-situ pyrolysis (TCISP) multi-physics simulation is conducted, in the fractured porous zone, by coupling heat transfer, fluid flow, and chemical reaction. A novel TCISP pattern of gas injection between fractured zones is proposed, by treating the fractured porous zone as a homogeneous porosity gradient descending region. In this case, nearly 11500 kg of oil can be produced within 6 months from a 10*10*1 m3 area. The influence of the fractured zone and porosity are investigated. Results indicated that gas injection between fractured zones is more conducive to rapid production, compared with More >

A Phase-Field Fracture Model for Brittle Anisotropic Materials

    Zhiheng Luo1, Lin Chen2, Nan Wang1, Bin Li1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2022.08813

Abstract Anisotropy is inherent in many materials, either because of the manufacturing process, or due to their microstructure, and can markedly influence the failure behavior. Anisotropic materials obviously possess both anisotropic elasticity and anisotropic fracture surface energy. Phase-field methods are elegant and mathematically well-grounded, and have become popular for simulating isotropic and anisotropic brittle fracture. Here, we developed a variational phase-field model for strongly anisotropic fracture, which accounts for the anisotropy both in elastic strain energy and in fracture surface energy, and the asymmetric behavior of cracks in traction and in compression. We implement numerically our… More >

    Multiscale Plasticity-Fracture Coupled Model

    Yinan Cui1,*, Zhijie Li1, Zhangtao Li1, Zhanli Liu1, Zhuo Zhuang1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010121

Abstract How the plasticity features influence the fracture behaviours of material is a critical question but remains far from well understood. To disclose this mystery, a multiscale plasticity-fracture coupled model is developed, which considers the atomistic-scale dislocation motion mechanism, the mesoscopic scales of discrete crack-dislocation interactions, and the continuum scale of crystalline plastic-fracture response. Body center cubic (bcc) material is chosen as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed model due to their wide applications and their special plasticity features, such as strong temperature dependence and non-Schmid effect. Several new insights about the fracture More >

Study on Crack Propagation Behavior of Concrete with Water Fracture Interactions

    Wenhu Zhao1,2,*, Chengbin Du2, Xiaocui Chen2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010048

Abstract Concrete structures such as offshore platforms, costal and port structures, dams, etc., are often submerged in water [1]. The water within concreter pores or cracks has a great influence on crack propagation behavior [2,3]. Several wedge-splitting experiments of compact specimens are conducted with a designed sealing device to study the water effects on concrete crack propagation. Different water pressures and different loading rates are considered loading on the pre-crack surfaces and waterproof strain gauges are stuck along the crack path to observe the fracture process during the experiments. Water pressure values on crack surfaces are… More >
