Analogy Between Rotating Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko Beams and Stiff Strings

    A.S Vinod Kumar, Ranjan Ganguli2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.88, No.6, pp. 443-474, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.088.443

Abstract The governing differential equation of a rotating beam becomes the stiff-string equation if we assume uniform tension. We find the tension in the stiff string which yields the same frequency as a rotating cantilever beam with a prescribed rotating speed and identical uniform mass and stiffness. This tension varies for different modes and are found by solving a transcendental equation using bisection method. We also find the location along the rotating beam where equivalent constant tension for the stiff string acts for a given mode. Both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams are considered for numerical results. The results provide physical insight… More >

    Taffetani M.1, Bertarelli E.1,2, Gottardi R.3,4, Raiteri R.5, Vena P.1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.87, No.5, pp. 433-460, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.087.433

Abstract Dynamic nanoindentation is a novel nanomechanical testing that is being increasingly used to characterize the frequency response of viscoelastic materials and of soft hydrated biological tissues at the micrometric and nanometric length scales. This technique is able to provide more information than those obtained by simple indentation; however, its interpretation is still an open issue for complex materials such as the case of anisotropic biological tissues that generally have a high water content. This work presents a numerical model to characterize the frequency response of poro-elastic tissues subjected to harmonic indentation loading with particular regard to the effect of geometrical… More >

Frequency Domain Analysis of Fluid-Solid Interaction Problems by Means of Iteratively Coupled Meshless Approaches

    L. Godinho1, D. Soares Jr.2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.87, No.4, pp. 327-354, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.087.327

Abstract In this work, a coupling strategy between the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) and the Kansa's Method (KM) for the analysis of fluid-solid interaction problems in the frequency domain is proposed. In this approach, the MFS is used to model the acoustic fluid medium, while KM accounts for the elastodynamic solid medium. The coupling between the two methods is performed iteratively, with independent discretizations being used for the two methods, without requiring matching between the boundary nodes along the solid-fluid interface. Two application examples, with single and multiple solid sub-domains, are presented, illustrating the behavior of the proposed approach. More >

    B.Y. Tian1, B. Tie1, D. Aubry1, X.Y. Su2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.76, No.3&4, pp. 217-234, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.076.217

Abstract The present work is devoted to a theoretical analysis and numerical modeling of elastic wave propagation firstly in a one-dimensional periodic elastic rod structure and then in two-dimensional periodic elastic beam structures by using Bloch wave theorem. The dispersion relation between Bloch wave vectors and eigen frequencies is obtained and its dependency upon the micro-structural characteristics of the periodic cellular structure is analyzed. Thanks to the Bloch wave transforms, only the primitive cell is considered theoretically or numerically and the phenomena of frequency band-gaps and the diffracted waves caused by the periodic cells are modeled and analyzed. Wei-Xin Ren1,2,3, Cong-Cong Su1, Wang-Ji Yan1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.70, No.1, pp. 67-92, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.070.067

Abstract A beam-arch segment assembly procedure is presented in this paper for the dynamic modelling and analysis of arch bridges. Such a beam-arch segment assembly is composed of different structural elements of arch bridges such as arch ribs (curved beams), suspenders, girders and floor beams. Based on the energy principle in structural dynamics, the stiffness matrix and mass matrix of such an assembly are formulated. The proposed procedure is then implemented to carry out the free vibration analysis of the Jian concrete filled tubular arch bridge. It is demonstrated that the proposed beam-arch segment assembly procedure is efficient with the advantages… More >

    C. J. Reddy1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.5, No.5, pp. 455-462, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.005.455

Abstract This paper presents an efficient algorithm to evaluate multi-spectral and multi-angular monostatic radar cross section (RCS) of large objects with very fine increments. The technique is based on the combination of Model Based Parameter Estimation (MBPE) method with hybrid frequency domain formulations. A general approach to formulation of MBPE is presented along with a similar approach called the Asymptotic Waveform Evaluation (AWE). Various numerical examples are presented for multi-spectral response calculations using method of moments (MoM) and the hybrid Finite Element-MoM technique in conjunction with MBPE. Example application of MBPE for hybrid MoM-Physical Optics approach for multi-angular calculations is also… More >

    P. Jose1, R.Kanapady2, K.K.Tamma3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.5, No.5, pp. 409-422, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.005.409

Abstract In this article, a novel hybrid finite element and Laplace transform formulation is presented for the computations of transient electromagnetic fields. The formulation is first based on application of Laplace transform technique for the pertinent differential equations, namely the Maxwell's equation in the non-integral form with subsequently, employing the Galerkin finite element formulations on the transformed equations to maintain the modeling versatility of complex geometries and numerical features for computational analysis. In addition, in conjunction with the above, proper scaling of the field quantities is applied to improve the condition of the effective global stiffness matrix. The problem is first… More >

    E. Bleszynski1, M. Bleszynski1, T. Jaroszewicz1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 295-318, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.005.295

Abstract We describe elements of our current work on the development of new methods for high frequency electromagnetic scattering, based on the wavefront (WF) representation of propagating fields and on the asymptotic but rigorous solution of integral equations for surface currents. In the wavefront evolution technique, surfaces of constant phase are constructed and treated not merely as collections of independent rays, but as well defined geometrical objects endowed with the full connectivity information. Hence, a precise determination of shadow and reflection boundaries, a construction of (multiply) diffracted wavefronts, a dynamic adjustment of the number of rays, an approximately constant ray-ray distance,… More >

    Wanil Byun1, Seung Jo Kim2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.6, pp. 551-576, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.551

Abstract A structural eigensolver for large-scale finite element analysis is developed. The algorithms and data structures implemented in this paper are well suited for a distributed memory environment. As an eigenvalue extracting algorithm, the well-known M orthogonal block Lanczos iteration incorporated with a parallel multifrontal solver (PMFS) was chosen. Basically, for the better performance of this algorithm in parallel computation, Lanczos vector allocation, mass matrix multiplication, and M inner product procedures were efficiently implemented. And the PMFS for a linear equation which is the most time-consuming part during Lanczos iterations was improved. The idea was to optimize network topologies of parallel… More >

A Novel Vibration-based Structure Health Monitoring Approach for the Shallow Buried Tunnel

Biao Zhou1,2,3, Xiong yao Xie1,2, Yeong Bin Yang4, Jing Cai Jiang3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.4, pp. 321-348, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.321

Abstract The vibration-based SHM (Structure Health Monitoring) system has been successfully used in bridge and other surface civil infrastructure. However, its application in operation tunnels remains a big challenge. The reasons are discussed in this paper by comparing the vibration characteristics of the free tunnel structure and tunnel-soil coupled system. It is revealed that all the correlation characteristics of the free tunnel FRFs (Frequency Response Function spectrum) will vanish and be replaced by a coupled resonance frequency when the tunnel is surrounded by soil. The above statement is validated by field measurements. Moreover, the origin of this phenomenon is investigated by… More >
