Effect of Reynolds Number on Inclined Heated Semicircular Ducts at Different Rotations

    E. A. El-Abeedy1, A. A. Busedra1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 153-167, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.153

Abstract Fully developed laminar mixed convection in inclined semicircular ducts is investigated numerically for the specific case of uniform heat input along the axial direction and uniform peripheral wall temperature, H1. The duct is considered over a variety of orientations (rotations) of its cross section, ranging from 0° (flat wall horizontally facing upward) to 180° (flat wall horizontally facing downward) with increment of 45° and a fixed inclination of its axis (with respect to the direction of gravity). In particular, the following conditions are considered: inclination α = 20°, 300 ≤ Re ≤ 1000, Pr = 4 More >

Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer in Two and Three-dimensional Minichannels

    D. Cherrared1, E. G. Filali1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 127-151, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.127

Abstract Our study deals with the characterization of the flow and related heat transfer in a smooth, circular minichannel. A duct with a sudden (sharp-edged) contraction is also considered. Prediction of the pressure loss coefficient in this case is obtained via the commercial code CFX 5.7.1. This code is based on the finite volume method for the solution of the Navier-Stokes and offers several turbulences models (in this study we use the shear stress turbulence model - SST). The numerical results are compared with experimental results obtained for a configuration similar to those considered in the More >

An Experimental Study on Enhancing Cooling Rates of Low Thermal Conductivity Fluids Using Liquid Metals

    S.-A. B. Al Omari1,2, E. Elnajjar1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 91-109, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.091

Abstract In a previous numerical study (Al Omari, Int. Communication in Heat and Mass Transfer, 2011) the heat transfer enhancement between two immiscible liquids with clear disparity in thermal conductivity such as water and a liquid metal (attained by co- flowing them in a direct contact manner alongside each other in mini channel) was demonstrated. The present work includes preliminary experimental results that support those numerical findings. Two immiscible liquids (hot water and liquid gallium) are allowed experimentally to exchange heat (under noflow conditions) in a stationary metallic cup where they are put in direct contact.… More >

    A. Maougal1, R. Bessaïh2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 35-59, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.035

Abstract The present study is a numerical investigation of the irreversibility and heat transfer properties of a steady laminar mixed flow in a square cavity, filled with a saturated porous medium and heated by a discrete set of heat sources. The continuity, Navier-Stokes, energy and entropy generation equations have been solved by a finite volume method. Both heat transfer irreversibility and fluid friction irreversibility have been taken into account in the computations of entropy generation. Simulations have bee carried out for Reynolds number Re=20, 40, 80, 100, 200, Darcy number, Da=10-5-10-1, Prandtl number, Pr=0.015, 0.7, 10, 103, More >

    A. Balbay1, H. Ülker2, Ö. Şahin3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 1-10, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.001

Abstract In this study, drying behaviours of the outer shell peeled Bittim (Pistacia terebinthus) with initial moisture content of 42.2% (dry basis (d.b)) was investigated in a novel fixed bed drying system. The drying experiments were performed at different temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C), air velocities (0.5 m/s and 1 m/s) and weights (30 g and 40 g). A constant rate period was not observed in the drying of bittims; all the drying process occurred in falling rate period. Three models in literature were selected to fit the experimental data. The fit quality of models More >

Phonon Transport of Rough Si/Ge Superlattice Nanotubes

    Yuhang Jing1, Ming Hu2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 43-59, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.038.043

Abstract Nanostructuring of thermoelectric materials bears promise for manipulating physical parameters to improve the energy conversion efficiency of thermoelectrics. In this paper the thermal transport in Si/Ge superlattice nanotubes is investigated by performing nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations aiming at realizing low thermal conductivity by surface roughening. Our calculations revealed that the thermal conductivity of Si/Ge superlattice nanotubes depends nonmonotonically on periodic length and increases as the wall thickness increases. However, the thermal conductivity is not sensitive to the inner diameters due to the strong surface scattering at thin wall thickness. In addition, introducing roughness onto the More >

Heat Conduction Analysis of Nonhomogeneous Functionally Graded Three-Layer Media

    Chien-Ching Ma1,2, Yi-Tzu Chen2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.36, No.2, pp. 177-201, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.036.177

Abstract Functionally graded material (FGM) is a particulate composite with continuously changing its thermal and mechanical properties in order to raise the bonding strength in the discrete composite made from different phases of material constituents. Furthermore, FGM is a potent tool to create an intermediate layer in metal–ceramic composites to avoid the properties discontinuities and reduce, thereby, the residual stresses. For the nonhomogeneous problem, the mathematical derivation is much complicated than the homogeneous case since the material properties vary with coordinate. To analyze the problem, the Fourier transform is applied and the general solution in transform… More >

A New Optimal Iterative Algorithm for Solving Nonlinear Poisson Problems in Heat Diffusion

    Chih-Wen Chang1,2, Chein-Shan Liu3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.2, pp. 143-175, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.143

Abstract The nonlinear Poisson problems in heat diffusion governed by elliptic type partial differential equations are solved by a modified globally optimal iterative algorithm (MGOIA). The MGOIA is a purely iterative method for searching the solution vector x without using the invert of the Jacobian matrix D. Moreover, we reveal the weighting parameter αc in the best descent vector w = αcE + DTE and derive the convergence rate and find a criterion of the parameter γ. When utilizing αc and γ, we can further accelerate the convergence speed several times. Several numerical experiments are carefully More >

CRITICAL HEAT FLUX DURING FLOW BOILING IN MINI AND MICROCHANNEL-A STATE OF THE ART REVIEW

    P. K. Das*, S. Chakraborty, S. Bhaduri

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.3, No.1, pp. 1-17, 2012, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v3.1.3008

Abstract A state of the art review of critical heat flux during flow boiling through mini and microchannels has been provided based on the open literature. This review mainly examines three aspects, namely the experimental investigations, the available correlations and the state of prediction using those correlations and finally the proposed physical mechanisms as well as the theoretical models. Before discussing the specific literature on microchannels, a brief overview of critical heat flux for pool and flow boiling is provided. The review has been concluded with a summary of the available information on this topic and More >
