    Technical Note : Prolonged exposure of human embryonic stem cells to heat shock induces necrotic cell death

    Abstract We investigated the effects of prolonged heat shock treatment on human embryonic stem cell (hESC) viability. The hESC viability steadily declined with longer exposure to heat shock treatment (43ºC). After 4 h of exposure to heat shock at 43ºC, only 56.2 ± 1.5% of cells were viable. Viability subsequently declined to 37.0 ± 3.3% and 3.5 ± 0.7% after 8 h and 16 h, respectively of heat shock treatment at 43ºC.     Abstract By using a quasi-boundary regularization we can formulate a two-point boundary value problem of the backward heat conduction equation. The ill-posed problem is analyzed by using the semi-discretization numerical schemes. Then, the resulting ordinary differential equations in the discretized space are numerically integrated towards the time direction by the Lie-group shooting method to find the unknown initial conditions.     Abstract Meshless local Petrov-Galerkin collocation method is applied to compute two-dimensional heat conduction problems in irregular domain. By taking the Dirac's Delta function as the test function, the local domain integration is avoided. The essential boundary conditions can be implemented easily in this method.     Abstract A new hypothesis regarding heat transmission during line heating is proposed. It states that the distribution of the temperature of the gas adjacent to the plate, TG, and the overall local heat transfer coefficient, α, depend only on the distance from the torch. An identification technique for TG and α is developed.     Abstract Convection in a differentially heated cavity partly filled with silicone oil has been experimentally studied. The air-oil layers are subjected to a temperature difference in the vertical direction, with the lower wall being heated with respect to the top.
