    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 113-122, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634118

Abstract This article reports the effect of epoxidized jatropha oil (EJO) on the thermal, cure and viscoelastic properties of epoxy resins. Epoxidized jatropha oil with an oxirane value of 5.0 was prepared and epoxy formulations containing different concentrations of EJO were evaluated for cure, morphology, thermal and viscoelastic properties. The curing temperature of the formulations increased with increasing EJO content. The glass transition temperature of the cured films decreased from 56 °C for unmodified epoxy resin to 23 °C for the sample with 60 wt% EJO reactive diluent, suggesting good plasticizing action. The thermal decomposition was only marginally affected. More >

    Megumi Baba1, Aya Shinmura1, Shigeru Tada1, Taku Amo2, Akira Tsukamoto1,*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 1-12, 2019, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2019.05199

Abstract Mitochondria in endothelial cells remodel morphologically when supraphysiological cyclic stretch is exerted on the cells. During remodeling, mitochondria become shorter, but how they do so remains elusive. Drp1 is a regulator of mitochondrial morphologies. It shortens mitochondria by shifting the balance from mitochondrial fusion to fission. In this study, we hypothesized that Drp1 activation is involved in mitochondrial remodeling under supraphysiological cyclic stretch. To verify the involvement of Drp1, its activation was first quantified with Western blotting, but Drp1 was not significantly activated in endothelial cells under supraphysiological cyclic stretch. Next, Drp1 activation was inhibited with Mdivi-1, but this did… More >

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 137-157, 2016, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2016.013.155

Abstract Random positioning machine (RPM) and diamagnetic levitation are two essential ground-based methods used to stimulate the effect of microgravity in space life science research. However, the force fields generated by these two methods are fundamentally different, as RPM generates a dynamic force field acting on the surface in contact with supporting substrate, whereas diamagnetic levitation generates a static force field acting on the whole body volume of the object (e.g. cell). Surprisingly, it is hardly studied whether these two fundamentally different force fields would cause different responses in mammalian cells. Thus we exposed cultured MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts to either dynamically stimulated… More >

Mechanical Stretch-Induced Changes in Cell Morphology and mRNA Expression of Tendon/Ligament-Associated Genes in Rat Bone-Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Guanbin Song∗,†,‡, Qing Luo*, Baiyao Xu*, Yang Ju

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 165-174, 2010, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2010.007.165

Abstract It has been demonstrated that mechanical stimulation plays a vital role in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells. However, little is known about the effects of mechanical stress on tendon/ligament development from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Here, using a custom-made cell-stretching device, we studied the effects of mechanical stretching on the cell morphology and mRNA expression of several key genes modulating tendon/ligament genesis. We demonstrate that bone-marrow-derived rat MSCs (rMSCs), when subjected to cyclic uniaxial stretching, express obvious detectable mRNAs for tenascin C and scleraxis, a unique maker of tendon/ligament formation, and significantly increased levels of type I… More >

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.4, No.4, pp. 189-200, 2007, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2007.004.189

Abstract Evaluation of mechanical environment on cellular function is a major field of study in cellular engineering. Endothelial cells lining the entire vascular lumen are subjected to pulsatile blood pressure and flow. Mechanical stresses caused by such forces determine function of arteries and their remodeling. Critical values of mechanical stresses contribute to endothelial damage, plaque formation and atherosclerosis. A device to impose cyclic strain on cultured cells inside an incubator was designed and manufactured operating with different load amplitudes, frequencies, numbers of cycles and ratios of extension to relaxation. Endothelial cells cultured on collagen coated silicon scaffolds were subjected to cyclic… More >

    Donggang Li1,2, Alexandra Levesque2, Qiang Wang1,3,2, Agnieszka Franczak2, Chun Wu1, Jean-Paul Chopart2, Jicheng He1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 207-218, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.030.207

Abstract Co/Ni bilayered films were prepared on ITO glass by electrodeposition assisted with a magnetic field up to 0.5T aligned parallel to the electrode surface. The effect of a high magnetic field annealing up to 12T on morphology and microstructure of the post-deposited films was investigated by field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Grain shape and grain boundary in the Co/Ni morphology were modified dramatically when the high magnetic field was applied during the annealing process. Magnetic anisotropy appeared in the films due to the preferential orientation of fcc-CoNi alloy in comparison with… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.3, pp. 341-374, 2014, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2014.098.341

Abstract Focal damage such as cartilaginous defects, erosions, micro-fractures, Schmorl nodes and thinning in the human vertebral endplate are thought to contribute to intervertebral disc degeneration by compromising the nutrition transport between the vertebral bone marrow and the disc nucleus pulposus. However, microfractures in the endplate are currently not detectable by conventional clinical radiographic methods. Nonetheless high quality visualisation of the human endplate is possible by means of advanced light microscopy and appropriate staining. The objective of this study focuses on efficient and inexpensive multi-scale protocols to prepare the surfaces of human endplate specimens for morphometric characterisations at the tissue and… More >

Arrangement of Monomer Injection in the Characteristics of Copolymer

    Mohsen Ghorbani1, Hossein Eisazadeh2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 153-164, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.153

Abstract Polypyrrole/Poly(vinyl acetate) (PPy/PVAc) copolymer was prepared by the copolymerization of vinyl acetate and pyrrole using FeCl3and benzoylperoxide as an oxidant in the presence of various surfactants such as sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate and poly(ethylene glycol) in the aqueous/non-aqueous media. The PPy/PVAc copolymer was characterized in terms of conductivity, morphology, chemical structure, particle size and yield. The results indicate that the morphology, particle size, yield and electrical conductivity of the products are dependent on the type of surfactant and the arrangement of monomer injection. The chemical structure of obtained product was determined by FTIR spectroscopy. By comparison FTIR spectra between pure PPy and… More >

Influence of Thermocapillary Convection on Solid-liquid Interface

    K. Matsunaga1, H. Kawamura1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 59-64, 2006, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2006.002.059

Abstract Existing studies on solidification phenomena mainly focused on the solidification processes per se. In real systems, however, one cannot neglect the effects of molten material convective flow, such as natural and thermocapillary convection (they strongly affect the resulting quality of the solidified materials). The present study aims to experimentally investigate on the effect of the thermocapillary flow upon the directional solidification in a liquid layer with a free upper surface. If no free surface exists, the solid--liquid interface (SLI) is vertical and straight, while, with the free surface, the SLI is inclined against the wall-normal direction and is curved in… More >
