The Use of High-Performance Fatigue Mechanics and the Extended Kalman / Particle Filters, for Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aircraft Structures

    Hai-Kun Wang1,2, Robert Haynes3, Hong-Zhong Huang1, Leiting Dong2,4, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.105, No.1, pp. 1-24, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.105.001

Abstract In this paper, we propose an approach for diagnostics and prognostics of damaged aircraft structures, by combing high-performance fatigue mechanics with filtering theories. Fast & accurate deterministic analyses of fatigue crack propagations are carried out, by using the Finite Element Alternating Method (FEAM) for computing SIFs, and by using the newly developed Moving Least Squares (MLS) law for computing fatigue crack growth rates. Such algorithms for simulating fatigue crack propagations are embedded in the computer program Safe- Flaw, which is called upon as a subroutine within the probabilistic framework of filter theories. Both the extended… More >

Prognostic value of postoperative urinary retention after male sling insertion

    Matthew Hall1, Allison Polland2, Steven Weissbart2, Stephen Mock3, Neil Grafstein2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 7344-7349, 2014

Abstract Introduction: While urinary retention is a known complication of AdVance male sling (AMS) placement for post-prostatectomy incontinence (PPI), there is minimal data regarding ultimate continence outcomes for patients who experience this complication. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of continence after AMS placement in patients who had postoperative urinary retention as compared with those patients who did not.
Materials and methods: A retrospective review was conducted of patients who underwent AMS placement for PPI between 2008 and 2011 with postoperative void trial (TOV). Preoperative factors such as urodynamic findings, daily pad number (PPD)… More >

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.16, No.4, pp. 4726-4732, 2009

Abstract Background: The ability of aggressive tumors to form nonendothelial tumor cell-lined microvascular channels is known as "vasculogenic mimicry" (VM). VM channels are revealed as periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive patterns, and in some tumors their presence predicts clinical outcomes.
Objective: We aimed to study VM channels in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (cRCC) tumors and explore their prognostic significance and relationship to other suggested prognostic factors such as thymidine phosphorylase (TP) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression.
Methods: We retrospectively studied 45 patients who had undergone radical nephrectomy for clinically confined cRCC (stage T2-T3N0M0) at the Russian Cancer Research… More >

Outcome analysis of prostate cancer patients with pre-treatment PSA greater than 50 ng/ml

    Ericka Wiebe1, George Rodrigues1,2, Michael Lock1, David D’Souza1, Larry Stitt2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.15, No.3, pp. 4078-4083, 2008

Abstract Introduction: The optimal management of prostate cancer patients presenting with prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels greater than 50 ng/ml is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with overall survival and biochemical outcome in a high-risk prostate cancer population with PSA > 50.0 ng/ml at time of diagnosis, and no clinical or radiological evidence of metastatic disease.
Materials and methods: A single institution chart review was conducted at the London Regional Cancer Program on 138 patients who presented with PSA levels greater than 50 ng/ml. Forty-eight (34.8%) of these patients had no clinical… More >

The prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and its receptor in clinically localized prostate cancer: a prospective evaluation in 100 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy

    Kaili Mao1, Cécile Badoual2, Philippe Camparo3, Nicolas Barry Delongchamps1, Annick Vieillefond4, Anh-Tuan Dinh-Xuan5, Michaël Peyromaure1

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.15, No.5, pp. 4257-4262, 2008

Abstract Objectives: To study the prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and its receptor VEGFR-1 in localized prostate cancer.
Methods: One hundred patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) for clinically localized prostate cancer were prospectively included. Plasma levels of VEGF-A were measured preoperatively. After intervention, tissue microarrays were built from the RP specimens. VEGF-A and VEGFR-1 expressions in prostate cancer tissue were determined using immunochemistry. Then the associations between plasma levels of VEGF-A, VEGF-A and VEGFR-1 expressions in prostate cancer tissue, and the outcome of patients were analyzed.
    Results: After a median follow-up of 22 months, 14 patients More >

The comparative survival of renal leiomyosarcoma

    Wayne S. Kendal1,2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.14, No.1, pp. 3435-3442, 2007

Abstract Introduction: Leiomyosarcoma of the kidney and renal pelvis is a rare tumor that, on the basis of limited data, has been ascribed a particularly poor prognosis compared to other subtypes of renal malignancy. Here the population-based Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry is used to study the survival of renal leiomyosarcomas.
Methods: There were 95,935 cases of invasive cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis retrieved from the SEER registry to provide 112 cases of leiomyosarcoma. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox proportional hazard models were constructed to compare the survival of leiomyosarcomas to other renal… More >

A prospective evaluation of the diagnostic and potential prognostic utility of urinary human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA in patients with bladder cancer

    Les Bowles1,2, Hanna Bialkowska-Hobrzanska1,2,3,4, Bernard Bukala5, Linda Nott5, Hassan Razvi2,5

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.6, pp. 2438-2444, 2004

Abstract Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA expression has been considered a surrogate marker for telomerase activity based on its parallel detection in urological malignancies, including transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder. The objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of urine hTERT mRNA marker and urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer.
The multiplex hTERT/GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3- phosphate dehydrogenase) reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was employed to assess hTERT mRNA expression in urine sediments from 43 patients with clinically apparent TCC undergoing transurethral resection. Tumor grade and pathological stage… More >
