Abstract There is a growing interest in the role that cancer biomarkers, metastasis-related molecules, and chemokines may play in the development and progression of various cancers. However, few studies have addressed the reliability of such biomarkers in healthy individuals over time. The objective of this study was to investigate the temporal reliability of multiple proteins in serum samples from healthy women who donated blood over successive years. Thirty five, postmenopausal women with two, repeated annual visits, and thirty, premenopausal women with three, repeated annual visits were randomly selected among eligible subjects from an existing, prospective cohort.… More >

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.15, No.5, pp. 4257-4262, 2008

Abstract Objectives: To study the prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and its receptor VEGFR-1 in localized prostate cancer.
Methods: One hundred patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) for clinically localized prostate cancer were prospectively included. Plasma levels of VEGF-A were measured preoperatively. After intervention, tissue microarrays were built from the RP specimens. VEGF-A and VEGFR-1 expressions in prostate cancer tissue were determined using immunochemistry. Then the associations between plasma levels of VEGF-A, VEGF-A and VEGFR-1 expressions in prostate cancer tissue, and the outcome of patients were analyzed.
    Results: After a median follow-up of 22 months, 14 patients More >

The efficacy of the Dornier Doli S lithotripter for renal stones

Christopher C. Hoag, William N. Taylor, Victor A. Rowley

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.6, pp. 3358-3363, 2006

Abstract Introduction: There is little documentation of the efficacy of the Doli-S lithotripter. This study investigated the outcome of ESWL with the Doli-S lithotripter on previously untreated renal calculi.
Methods: Over a 12-month period, 105 consecutive patients with renal stones, treated by a single urologist were enrolled in the study. None of the stones were previously treated. Data gathered included stone characteristics and treatment characteristics. Treatment was to an endpoint of either fluoroscopically successful fragmentation or to 2500 shockwaves. Patients were followed with KUBs, ultrasounds, or CT-KUBs to assess residual stone burden. Treatment success was defined as… More >

A prospective evaluation of the diagnostic and potential prognostic utility of urinary human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA in patients with bladder cancer

    Les Bowles1,2, Hanna Bialkowska-Hobrzanska1,2,3,4, Bernard Bukala5, Linda Nott5, Hassan Razvi2,5

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.6, pp. 2438-2444, 2004

Abstract Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA expression has been considered a surrogate marker for telomerase activity based on its parallel detection in urological malignancies, including transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder. The objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of urine hTERT mRNA marker and urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer.
The multiplex hTERT/GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3- phosphate dehydrogenase) reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was employed to assess hTERT mRNA expression in urine sediments from 43 patients with clinically apparent TCC undergoing transurethral resection. Tumor grade and pathological stage… More >

Three Dimensional Wave Scattering by Rigid Circular Pipelines Submerged in an Acoustic Waveguide

António Tadeu, Andreia Pereira, Luís Godinho1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 49-62, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.049

Abstract The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is used to compute the three-dimensional variation pressure field generated by a point pressure source inside a flat waveguide channel filled with a homogeneous fluid, in the presence of infinite rigid circular pipelines. The problem is solved in the frequency domain, using boundary elements to model the pipeline and an appropriate Green's function to simulate the free surface and the rigid floor of the channel. Because of the 2 ---1/2 ---D geometry of the problem, the separation of variables has been used, and the solution at each frequency is expressed in… More >
