A Physically Meaningful Level Set Method for Topology Optimization of Structures

    Zhen Luo1,2, Nong Zhang1,3, Yu Wang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.83, No.1, pp. 73-96, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.083.073

Abstract This paper aims to present a physically meaningful level set method for shape and topology optimization of structures. Compared to the conventional level set method which represents the design boundary as the zero level set, in this study the boundary is embedded into non-zero constant level sets of the level set function, to implicitly implement shape fidelity and topology changes in time via the propagation of the discrete level set function. A point-wise nodal density field, non-negative and value-bounded, is used to parameterize the level set function via the compactly supported radial basis functions (CSRBFs)… More >

    G. Kosec1, B. Šarler1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 227-254, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.026.227

Abstract This paper introduces an effective H-adaptive upgrade to solution of the transport phenomena by the novel Local Radial Basis Function Collocation Method (LRBFCM). The transport variable is represented on overlapping 5-noded influence-domains through collocation by using multiquadrics Radial Basis Functions (RBF). The involved first and second derivatives of the variable are calculated from the respective derivatives of the RBFs. The transport equation is solved through explicit time stepping. The H-adaptive upgrade includes refinement/derefinement of one to four nodes to/from the vicinity of the reference node. The number of the nodes added or removed depends on… More >

A Computational Inverse Technique to Determine the Dynamic Constitutive Model Parameters of Concrete

    R. Chen1, X. Han1,2, J. Liu1, W. Zhang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.25, No.2, pp. 135-158, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.025.135

Abstract In this paper, a computational inverse technique is presented to determine the constitutive parameters of concrete based on the penetration experiments. In this method, the parameter identification problem is formulated as an inverse problem, in which the parameters of the constitutive model can be characterized through minimizing error functions of the penetration depth measured in experiments and that computed by forward solver LS-DYNA. To reduce the time for forward calculation during the inverse procedure, radial basis function approximate model is used to replace the actual computational model. In order to improve the accuracy of approximation More >

A Numerical Technique Based on Integrated RBFs for the System Evolution in Molecular Dynamics

    N. Mai-Duy1, T. Tran-Cong1, N. Phan-Thien2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.79, No.3&4, pp. 223-236, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.079.223

Abstract This paper presents a new numerical technique for solving the evolution equations in molecular dynamics (MD). The variation of the MD system is represented by radial-basis-function (RBF) equations which are constructed using integrated multiquadric basis functions and point collocation. The proposed technique requires the evaluation of forces once per time step. Several examples are given to demonstrate the attractiveness of the present implementation. More >

    G. C. Bourantas1, E. D. Skouras2,3, V. C. Loukopoulos4, G. C. Nikiforidis1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.64, No.2, pp. 187-212, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.064.187

Abstract Meshfree point collocation method (MPCM) is developed, solving the velocity-vorticity formulation of Navier-Stokes equations, for two-dimensional, steady state incompressible viscous flow problems in the presence of heat transfer. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of the velocity-correction method, ensuring the continuity equation. The Gaussian Radial Basis Functions (GRBF) interpolation is employed to construct the shape functions in conjunction with the framework of the point collocation method. The cases of forced, natural and mixed convection in a 2D rectangular enclosure are examined. The accuracy and the stability of the proposed scheme are demonstrated through three More >

A simple and effective preconditioner for integrated-RBF-based Cartesian-grid schemes

    N. Mai-Duy1, T. Tran-Cong1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 51-56, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.014.051

Abstract This paper presents a preconditioning scheme to improve the condition number of integrated radial-basis-function (RBF) matrices in solving large-scale 2D elliptic problems. The problem domain is discretised using a Cartesian grid, over which integrated RBF networks are employed to represent the field variable. The present preconditioner is constructed from 1D integrated RBF networks along grid lines. Test problems defined on rectangular and non-rectangular domains are employed to study the performance of the scheme. More >

Meshless Solution of Potential Problems by Combining Radial Basis Functions and Tensor Product ones

    Annamaria Mazzia1, Flavio Sartoretto2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.68, No.1, pp. 95-112, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.068.095

Abstract Meshless methods for the solution of Partial Differential Equations receive nowadays increasing attention. Many meshless strategies have been proposed. The majority of meshless variational methods one can find in the literature, use Radial Basis Functions (RBF) as generators of suitable trial and test spaces. One of the main problems encountered when exploiting RBF is performing numerical integrations over circles (when 2D problems are attacked, spheres for 3D ones). We exploit Tensor Product Functions (TPF) as the test function space. This strategy allows one to consider rectangular integration domains, which are much easier to manage. This More >

Solving Elastic Problems with Local Boundary Integral Equations (LBIE) and Radial Basis Functions (RBF) Cells

    E. J. Sellountos1, A. Sequeira1, D. Polyzos2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.2, pp. 109-136, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.109

Abstract A new Local Boundary Integral Equation (LBIE) method is proposed for the solution of plane elastostatic problems. Non-uniformly distributed points taken from a Finite Element Method (FEM) mesh cover the analyzed domain and form background cells with more than four points each. The FEM mesh determines the position of the points without imposing any connectivity requirement. The key-point of the proposed methodology is that the support domain of each point is divided into parts according to the background cells. An efficient Radial Basis Functions (RBF) interpolation scheme is exploited for the representation of displacements in More >

An Advanced Implicit Meshless Approach for the Non-linear Anomalous Subdiffusion Equation

    Y. T. Gu1, P. Zhuang2, F. Liu3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 303-334, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.056.303

Abstract Recently, the numerical modelling and simulation for anomalous subdiffusion equation (ASDE), which is a type of fractional partial differential equation(FPDE) and has been found with widely applications in modern engineering and sciences, are attracting more and more attentions. The current dominant numerical method for modelling ASDE is Finite Difference Method (FDM), which is based on a pre-defined grid leading to inherited issues or shortcomings. This paper aims to develop an implicit meshless approach based on the radial basis functions (RBF) for numerical simulation of the non-linear ASDE. The discrete system of equations is obtained by… More >
