A Note on Statistical Strength of Carbon Nanotubes

    X. Frank Xu1,2, Yuxin Jie3, Irene J. Beyerlein4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 17-30, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.038.017

Abstract This note aims to relate the measured strength statistics of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the physics of brittle fracture and the weakest link model. By approximating an arbitrary flaw size distribution with a segmented power law, an effort is made to extend applicability of the Weibull distribution to arbitrary flaw populations, which explains why the Weibull distribution fits the experimental data of CNTs and many other brittle materials, and why in other cases it is not so clear. A generalized Weibull distribution is proposed to account for all non-asymptotic cases. The published CNT testing More >

    J. Zidek1,2, J. Kucera1, J. Jancar1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.28, No.3, pp. 213-230, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.028.213

Abstract The paper presents a combination of worm-like chain numerical models and one with a finite set of nano-particles. The primary objective of the models was to analyze the distribution of space in a system filled by particles. Information on the distribution of space was compared to properties of chains inside the set of particles. The set of nanoparticles was constructed with a tool generating a finite set of particles that is randomly distributed in a given space. The particles have a prescribed volume fraction and uniform size. First, the proportions of chains and particles were… More >

A 2D Improvement of Radiative Heat Transfer with the P1 Approximation and a Statistical Narrow Band Model

    A. Khourchafi1, M. El Alami2,3, M. Najam2, M. Belhaq4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 323-338, 2012, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2012.008.323

Abstract A spectral radiation study has been carried out in the framework of a statistical narrow-band model based on an inverse-tailed exponential law and the socalled P1 approximation. This new spectral formulation, which may be also regarded as a grey band formulation with a local absorption coefficient, leads to two implementation methods: a non correlated form in which the averaged formulation of the P1 approximation does not take into account the correlation between fundamental quantities and a pseudo-correlated variant consisting basically of a technique for improving the anisotropy of the radiative intensity. Real gases (H2O, CO2) are More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.7, No.1&2, pp. 139-152, 2011, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2011.007.139

Abstract This paper presents the details of method of sample size determination to estimate the characteristic fatigue life of aluminum alloy, A356.2-T6. The characteristic fatigue life of the alloy has been estimated by assuming log normal distribution model. A step wise procedure is outlined to determine the number of specimens required at predetermined stress amplitude to estimate the fatigue life with an acceptable error at 50% probability and various confidence levels, 90%, 95% and 99%. Maximum percentage of errors has also been calculated for the above probability and confidence levels. Details of generation of S-N curve More >

Surya R. Kalidindi, Stephen R. Niezgoda, Ayman A. Salem

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 79-80, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.016.079

Abstract Microstructure Informatics is a critical building block of ICME infrastructure. Accelerated design and development of new advanced materials with improved performance characteristics and their successful insertion in engineering practice are largely hindered by the lack of a rigorous mathematical framework for the robust generation of microstructure informatics relevant to the specific application. In this paper, we describe a set of novel and efficient computational protocols that are capable of accelerating significantly the process of building the needed microstructure informatics for a targeted application. These novel protocols have several advantages over the current practice in the More >

Nearest Particle Distance and the Statistical Distribution of Agglomerates from a Model of a Finite Set of Particles

    J. Zidek1,2, J. Kucera1, J. Jancar1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 183-208, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.183

Abstract The structural analysis of a particulate composite with randomly distributed hard spheres is presented based on a model proposed earlier. The structural factors considered include the distribution of interparticle distances and the conditions for particle agglomeration. The interparticle distance was characterized by the nearest particle distance (NPD) and the distance derived from Delaunay triangulation (DT). The distances were calculated for every particle in the particle set and analyzed in the form of a cumulative distribution function (CDF). The CDF provides two parameters: the representation of particles which are in very close proximity to their neighbors More >

    Kandus1 M, D Almorza3, R Boggio Ronceros2, JC Salerno1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.79, pp. 39-46, 2010, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2010.79.039

Abstract Our objective was to determine the genotype-environment interaction (GxE) in a hybrid integrated by maize lines either carrying or not balanced lethal systems. Experiments were conducted in three locations over a period of two years considering each yearlocation combination as a different environment. Yield data were analysed using the Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model and the Sites Regression Analysis (SREG). Results were represented by biplots. The AMMI analysis was the best model for determining the interaction. More >

Abstract In the theory of coaching an important role belongs to the factorial management. The art of planning, controlling and evaluating the main factors (physical, technical, tactical, psychological and theoretical) gives to the coach the real value of his work. The individualization of these factors turn the process of coaching into a complex activity which in nowadays has teamwork finality: to achieve the performance. At the same time, the manager of the whole process of coaching has the whole responsibility of the task.

Multicriterion statistical extrapolation for a preset prediction in performance sport

    Emil Budescu1, Mircea Stefanovici2, Ioan Iacob3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 84-84, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.084

Abstract The present paper presents the issues related to the dynamic series adjustment in order to determine the probability to reach preset values of performance, in the stated period of time and of known statistical chronological series. So, with trend functions, one can approximate the variation tendency in time of the sportive performance parameter, the difficulty being, though, the weight of each dynamic series of statistical data in the probability evaluation of performance. Each dynamic series represents values of the physical and physical tests monitored over a training phase, so over a stated period of time.… More >

Evaluation of Statistical Feature Encoding Techniques on Iris Images

    Chowhan S.S.1, G.N. Shinde2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 67-74, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.067

Abstract Feature selection, often used as a pre-processing step to machine learning, is designed to reduce dimensionality, eliminate irrelevant data and improve accuracy. Iris Basis is our first attempt to reduce the dimensionality of the problem while focusing only on parts of the scene that effectively identify the individual. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is to extract iris feature to recognize iris pattern. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a dimension-reduction tool that can be used to reduce a large set of variables to a small set that still contains most of the information in the large set.
