    Herbal medicinal teas from South Africa

    Abstract An investigation of herbal medicinal teas from Western Cape, South Africa was conducted to assess the varieties of herbal teas used to treat various ailments. Each packet of medicinal tea is a blend of carefully selected four or more herbs which are commonly grown in the organic garden in an ancient valley near the southernmost tip of South Africa and some indigenous herbs picked up in the nearby mountains.     Abstract The Meshless Local Petrov Galerkin (MLPG) method is used to solve the non-steady two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Transient laminar flow field calculations have been carried out in domains wherein certain surfaces have: (i) a sliding motion, (ii) a harmonic motion, (iii) an undulatory movement, and (iv) a contraction-expansion movement.     Abstract The paper develops a quasi-steady molecular statics model to analyze nanoscale cutting of copper materials by diamond cutters with different shapes. Cutting action, cutting force, equivalent strain and equivalent stress are discussed and compared. The quasi-steady molecular statics nanocutting model first assumes the trajectory of each atom of the copper workpiece being cut whenever the diamond cutter goes forward one step.     Abstract A numerical investigation of the transient, three dimensional, laminar natural convection of a fluid confined in a spherical container is carried out. Initially the fluid is quiescent with a uniform temperature Ti equal to the temperature of the wall of the container. At time t=0, the temperature of the wall is suddenly lowered to a uniform temperature Tw=0.     Abstract Numerical results of natural convection flows in two-dimensional cavities, filled with air, are presented to study the effects on the characteristics of the flows as some parameters vary: the Rayleigh number Ra and the aspect ratio A of the cavity.     Abstract A Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method based on Local Boundary Integral Equation (LBIE) techniques is employed here for the solution of transient elastic problems with damping. The Radial Basis Functions (RBF) interpolation scheme is exploited for the meshless representation of displacements throughout the computational domain. On the intersections between the local domains and the global boundary, tractions are treated as independent variables via conventional boundary interpolation functions.     Abstract Mesh adaptation is a fairly established tool to obtain numerically accurate solutions for flow problems. Computational efficiency is, however, not always guaranteed for the adaptation strategies found in literature. Typically excessive mesh growth diminishes the potential efficiency gain. This paper, therefore, extends the strategy proposed by [Aftosmis and Berger (2002)] to compute the refinement threshold.
