The Atomistic Study of Textured Polycrystalline Nanofilms

    I-L. Chang1, W.-C. Ding

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.68, No.3, pp. 297-312, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.068.297

Abstract Molecular dynamics method incorporating with parallel computing technique was employed to study the mechanical properties of textured polycrystalline nanofilms with fixed out-of-plane normal direction. The grain size and film thickness effects on both the elastic and plastic properties of the copper nanofilm were examined. It is shown from the simulation that the elastic and plastic properties (i.e., Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, biaxial yield stress, etc) of textured polycrystalline nanofilms depend on the grain size and the film thickness. As the grain size of the nanofilm become larger, the Young’s modulus and biaxial yield stress increase More >

Numerical Analysis of Large Strain Simple Shear and Fixed-End Torsion of HCP Polycrystals

    H. Wang1, Y. Wu2, P.D. Wu1, K.W. Neale3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 255-284, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.255

Abstract Large strain homogeneous simple shear of Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP) polycrystals is first studied numerically. The analyses are based on the classical Taylor model and the Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) model with various Self-Consistent Schemes (SCSs). In these polycrystal plasticity models, both slip and twinning contribute to plastic deformations. The simple shear results are then extended to the case of solid circular bars under large strain fixed-end torsion, where it is assumed that the solid bar has the same mechanical properties as the element analyzed for large strain simple shear. It is shown that the predicted More >

Spectral Approaches for the Fast Computation of Yield Surfaces and First-Order Plastic Property Closures for Polycrystalline Materials with Cubic-Triclinic Textures

    Hamad F. Al-Harbi1, Marko Knezevic1,2, Surya R. Kalidindi1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 153-172, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.015.153

Abstract In recent work, we have demonstrated the viability and computational advantages of DFT-based spectral databases for facilitating crystal plasticity solutions in face-centered cubic (fcc) metals subjected to arbitrary deformation paths. In this paper, we extend and validate the application of these novel ideas to body-centered cubic (bcc) metals that exhibit a much larger number of potential slip systems. It was observed that the databases for the bcc metals with a larger number of slip systems were more compact compared to those obtained previously for fcc metals with a smaller number of slip systems. Furthermore, we More >

Modeling Intergranular Crack Propagation in Polycrystalline Materials

    M.A.Arafin1, J.A.Szpunar2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 125-140, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.014.125

Abstract A novel microstructure, texture and grain boundary character based model has been proposed to simulate the intergranular crack propagation behavior in textured polycrystalline materials. The model utilizes the Voronoi algorithm and Monte Carlo simulations to construct the microstructure with desired grain shape factor, takes the texture description of the materials to assign the orientations of the grains, evaluates the grain boundary character based on the misorientation angle - axis calculated from the orientations of the neighboring grains, and takes into account the inclination of grain boundaries with respect to the external stress direction. CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 99-124, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.014.099

Abstract This work aims to understand the texture distribution in the localized necking band formed during uni-axial tension of AA5754 using an edge-constrained, plane strain post-necking FE model. The model domain is a long cross section of the band. Initial grain structure is mapped into the mesh from EBSD data using a modified Voroni-cell interpolation and considering pre-straining prior to localized necking. The material points in grains are assumed to exhibit isotropic elastoplastic behavior but have a relative strength in terms of Taylor factors which are updated by a Taylor-Bishop-Hill model. The predicted textures and gradients More >
