A New Interval Comparison Relation and Application in Interval Number Programming for Uncertain Problems

    C. Jiang1,2, X. Han1, D. Li3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 275-304, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.027.275

Abstract For optimization or decision-making problems with interval uncertainty, the interval comparison relation plays a very important role, as only based on it a better or best decision can be determined. In this paper, a new kind of interval comparison relation termed as reliability-based possibility degree of interval is proposed to give quantitative evaluations on "how much better" of one interval than another, which is more suitable for engineering reliability analysis and numerical computation than the existing relations. In the new relation, the range of the comparing values is extended into the whole real number field, and the precise comparison More >

    A.R.Ervilha1,2, F.A.Sousa1, J.M.C.Pereira1, J.C.F.Pereira1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.89, No.5, pp. 361-387, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.089.361

Abstract Faster than real time stochastic fire spread predictions are reported using a Non-Intrusive Spectral Projection (NISP) method based on Polynomial Chaos expansion and Graphic Processing Units (GPUs). The fireLib BEHAVE model together with a raster surface fire growth algorithm was implemented using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming language. The uncertainty generated by the four random variables considered (wind speed, wind direction, fuel moisture, and fuel load) is quantified in the stochastic solution. Stochastic simulation of an idealized vegetation fire in a realistic complex terrain is obtained with speed-ups as high as 176 when More >

    W. Zhang1, X. Han1,2, J. Liu1, R. Chen1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.5, pp. 385-408, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.385

Abstract A novel inverse technique is presented for quantifying the uncertainty of the identified the results in an encounter condition identification problem. In this technique, the polynomial response surface method based on the structure-selection technique is first adopted to construct the approximation model of the projectile/target system, so as to reduce the computational cost. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo method is then used to identify the encounter condition parameters and their confidence intervals based on this cheap approximation model with Bayesian perspective. The results are demonstrated through the simulated test cases, which show the utility and More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.83, No.3, pp. 221-248, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.083.221

Abstract An adaptive extended Kalman filter is developed and investigated for a transient heat transfer problem in which a high heat flux spot source is applied on one side of a thin plate and ultrasonic pulse time of flight is measured between spatially separated transducers on the opposite side of the plate. The novel approach is based on the uncertainty in the state model covariance and leverages trends in the extended Kalman filter covariance to drive changes to the state model covariance during convergence. This work is an integral part of an effort to develop a… More >

ON UNCERTAINTY AND LOCAL SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS FOR STEADY-STATE CONJUGATE HEAT TRANSFER PROBLEMS PART 1: EMISSIVITY, FLUID TEMPERATURE, AND CONDUCTANCE

    Christian Rauch*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 1-8, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.3.3006

Abstract In recent years, significant effort has been placed into developing automated multi-physics simulation. The exchange of boundary conditions has lead to more realistic as well as more complex simulations with usually slower convergence rate when the coupling is being performed between two different codes. In this paper the equations of local sensitivities for element centered steady-state combined convection, conduction, and thermal radiation problems are being derived. A numerical analysis on the stability of the solution matrix is being conducted. Partial uncertainties and the relative importance of the heat transfer modes are investigated by their uncertainty More >

    P. Gayathri1, R. Ganguli1,2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.7, No.1&2, pp. 119-138, 2011, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2011.007.119

Abstract The effect of random variation in composite material properties on the reliability of structural damage detection is addressed in this paper. A composite plate is considered as the structure and a finite element model is used for the simulation. Damage growth due to cyclic loading is addressed. Matrix crack induced delamination is emphasized in this paper. Thresholds for the damage accumulation are found using finite element simulations so that the structure can be subjected to inspections and removed from service safely. Uncertainty effects of composite material properties on the response of the structure are quantified More >

Nengguang Liu, Wei Gao, Chongmin Song, Nong Zhang

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 83-84, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.020.083

Abstract This paper presents the probabilistic dynamic analysis of vehicle-bridge interaction systems. The bridge's and vehicle's parameters are considered as random variables as well as the road surface roughness is modeled as random process. A quarter-car model is used to represent a moving vehicle and the bridge is treated as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. From the equation of motion for the vehicle-bridge coupling system, the expressions for mean value and standard deviation of bridge response are developed by using the random variable's functional moment method. The effects of the individual system parameters and the road surface roughness More >

Sparse Grid Approach to Orbit Uncertainty Propagation

Yang Cheng, Bin Jia, Ming Xin

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 33-34, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.016.033

Abstract A sparse grid approach to orbit uncertainty propagation is presented. Efficient and accurate uncertainty propagation methods for nonlinear dynamic systems have been of enormous interest to space object tracking. Recent methods include those based on the time evolution of the probability density function, the statistical moments, the random samples, or a sum of Gaussian components. The idea of the sparse grid method for orbit uncertainty propagation is to represent the initial uncertainty by a sparse grid, propagate the sparse grid points individually through the nonlinear orbit dynamics, and compute the statistical moments from the propagated More >

    W. Zhang1, X. Han1,2, J. Liu1, Z. H. Tan1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 201-226, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.026.201

Abstract The uncertainty inverse problems with insufficiency and imprecision in the input and/or output parameters are widely existing and unsolved in the practical engineering. The insufficiency refers to the partly known parameters in the input and/or output, and the imprecision refers to the measurement errors of these ones. In this paper, a combined method is proposed to deal with such problems. In this method, the imprecision of these known parameters can be described by probability distribution with a certain mean value and variance. Sensitive matrix method is first used to transform the insufficient formulation in the More >

Reliability-Based Multiobjective Design Optimization under Interval Uncertainty

    Fangyi Li1,2, Zhen Luo3, Guangyong Sun4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.74, No.1, pp. 39-64, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.074.039

Abstract This paper studies the reliability-based multiobjective optimization by using a new interval strategy to model uncertain parameters. A new satisfaction degree of interval, which is significantly extended from [0, 1] to [–∞, +∞], is introduced into the non-probabilistic reliability-based optimization. Based on a predefined satisfaction degree level, the uncertain constraints can be effectively transformed into deterministic ones. The interval number programming method is applied to change each uncertain objective function to a deterministic two-objective optimization. So in this way the uncertain multiobjective optimization problem is transformed into a deterministic optimization problem and a reliability-based multiobjective More >
