Application of Different Variants of the BEM in Numerical Modeling of Bioheat Transfer Problems

    Ewa Majchrzak*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.10, No.3, pp. 201-232, 2013, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2013.010.201

Abstract Heat transfer processes proceeding in the living organisms are described by the different mathematical models. In particular, the typical continuous model of bioheat transfer bases on the most popular Pennes equation, but the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation and the dual phase lag equation are also used. It should be pointed out that in parallel are also examined the vascular models, and then for the large blood vessels and tissue domain the energy equations are formulated separately. In the paper the different variants of the boundary element method as a tool of numerical solution of bioheat transfer problems More >

Functional interleukin-10 promoter variants in coronary artery disease patients in Tunisia

    Sonia Ben-Hadj-Khalifa1, Lakhdar Ghazouani1, Nesrine Abboud1, Ali Ben-Khalfallah2, Fatma Annabi2, Faouzi Addad3, Wassim Y. Almawi4, Touhami Mahjoub1

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.21, No.2, pp. 136-141, 2010, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2010.0194

Abstract Objectives. The contribution of interleukin (IL)-10 promoter variants -1082G/A, -819C/T, and -592C/A to the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) was investigated in 291 CAD patients and 291 age- and gender-matched control subjects. Methods and results. IL-10 genotyping was performed using PCR-allele-specific amplification (PCR-ASA). Regression analysis was employed in assessing the contribution of the IL-10 variants to the overall CAD risk. A higher frequency of the -592A allele (p = 0.004), but not the -1082A (p = 0.828) or -819T (p = 0.952) alleles, was seen in CAD patients. A higher frequency of -592C/A (p… More >

Association of two variants of the interferon-alpha receptor-1 gene with the presentation of hepatitis B virus infection

    Le H. Song1,2,*, Nguyen T. Xuan1,*, Nguyen L. Toan1,3, Vu Q. Binh3, Angelica B. Boldt1, Peter G. Kremsner1, Jürgen F. J. Kun1

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.19, No.4, pp. 204-210, 2008, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2008.0137

Abstract Interferon-α (IFNα) is a critical mediator of immunity to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Although IFN has been used in the treatment of viral hepatitis for more than a decade, the role of IFN-α-receptor in HBV infection has not been intensively studied. We have evaluated the impact of two variants of the IFNAR1 gene on the outcome of HBV infection. Four hundred and fifty eight HBV-infected Vietnamese patients, with well-characterised clinical profiles including all forms of hepatic disease, and 160 non-infected, healthy Vietnamese individuals were enrolled in the study. Of these patients, 54 had acute… More >

Anatomic variants associated with newborn circumcision complications

Eric Mayer, Daniel J. Caruso, Murali Ankem, Mark C. Fisher, Kenneth B. Cummings, Joseph G. Barone

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.10, No.5, pp. 2013-2016, 2003

Abstract Objective: Circumcision is one of the commonly performed procedures on males in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The association of minor anatomic variations of the newborn genitalia in patients with minor circumcision complications has not been previously examined. In this study, we looked for an association between subtle genital anatomic variations and newborn circumcision complications.
Materials and methods: Over an 18-month period, children presenting for circumcision revision were examined for minor variations in genital anatomy. Children referred for other urological problems during the same period comprised the control group. The same physician evaluated… More >
