Production of a double purpose wheat defoliated at different developmental stages of the growth apex

Merchán HD, EE Lutz, AE Morant

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.76, pp. 133-142, 2007, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2007.76.133

Abstract In mixed systems (beef and grain), double purpose wheat is an alternative to reduce competition between the winter cereals for grazing and wheat for harvesting. In order to optimize grass production and avoid grain yield decreases, it is necessary to use varieties with long vegetative periods and the last defoliation should be made before the apex changes to the reproductive developmental stage. A study was conducted in the experimental field of the Asociación de Cooperativas Argentinas in Cabildo (38º 36' S, 61º 58' W) to evaluate grass and grain production of the facultative wheat variety (TriticumMore >

Forage characteristics for double purpose wheats

Morant AE, HD Merchán, EE Lutz

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.76, pp. 95-102, 2007, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2007.76.095

Abstract Length of the vegetative period and forage production were evaluated in ten commercial, long term cycle wheat varieties: Buck Charrúa, Cooperación Nanihué, Buck Cacique, Cooperación Maipún, Buck Catriel, ProINTA Pigüé, Buck Poncho, ProINTA Pincén, ProINTA Super and Cooperación Liquén. The study was conducted in the experimental field of the Departmento de Agronomia, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Bahía Blanca, Argentina, under dry land conditions. A completely Randomized Block Design with five replicates was used. Seeding was effected on 9 April 1996. From the time the plant had three leaves to the Double Ridge (DA) apex stage,… More >

Phaeosphaeria avenaria f. sp. triticea (anamorph Stagonospora avenae f. sp. triticea) on wheat, in Argentina

    Kiehr M, R Delhey

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.76, pp. 85-94, 2007, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2007.76.085

Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants showing leaf spots associated with pycnidia of Stagonospora sp. were collected near the city of Tres Arroyos (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina). The fungus was isolated in artificial media where it formed asexual and sexual fructifications which permitted its identification as Phaeosphaeria avenaria f. sp. triticea (anamorph S. avenae f. sp. triticea). The fungus was experimentally transmitted to wheat and barley plants and re-isolated, fulfilling Koch´s Postulates. This is the first record of P. avenaria f. sp. triticea in Argentina. More >

Double-purpose wheat production and its association with a short-cycle wheat

Lutz EE, HD Merchán, AE Morant*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.75, pp. 85-89, 2006, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2006.75.085

Abstract Management of a double purpose wheat is not easy. Therefore, a simpler management alternative was studied: the mixture of two wheat varieties, one of long- cycle and the other one of short-cycle. Research was effected in the experimental field of the Asociación of Cooperativas Argentinas (38º 36´S, 61º 58´O and 122 m asl), 15 Km SW of Cabildo (Bs. As), in the semi-arid wheat subregion V S. At this place, forage and grain production of a suitable double-purpose wheat (ProINTA Pincén) was compared to its mixture with a short-cycle variety (Cooperación Calquín), either in the More >

    Production of a double-purpose wheat*

Merchán HD, EE Lutz, AE Morant*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.75, pp. 41-46, 2006, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2006.75.041

Abstract In the mixed systems (beef and grain) of the semiarid Pampa, double purpose wheat use might diminish competition by the soil resource, external inputs into the system and money, which are often associated between winter cereals for grazing and/or grain harvest. In the experimental station of the Asociación de Cooperativas Argentinas in Cabildo (wheat semiarid subregion V S), a trial to evaluate shoot and grain production was conducted. The wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) variety Buck Charrúa, commercially recommended for double purpose use was utilized. Grain production of autumn-sown plots, which were defoliated 0, 1, 2 or… More >

Transgenic wheat plants resistant to herbicide BASTA obtained by microprojectile bombardment

MARIANA N. MELCHIORRE, HERNÁN R. LASCANO, VICTORIO S.TRIPPI

    BIOCELL, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 217-223, 2002, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2002.26.217

Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum) transgenic plants of an important commercial cv (Oasis) was obtained with an efficient and short procedure. First, the optimum conditions for the embriogenic calli generation from inmature embryos with a high regeneration percentage were established. The transformation of calli was performed by high velocity microprojectile bombardment, using the pAHC25 plasmid, which contains the reporter gene β-glucuronidase (GUS) and the selectable BAR gene which confers resistance to the herbicide Basta. The transformations were confirmed by β-glucuronidase assay activity, PCR and Southern blot analysis. The efficiency of this procedure was high and similar to other More >
