Abstract To address the problem of poor wave resistance of existing offshore floating wind turbines, a new type of semi-submersible platform with truncated-cone-type upper pontoons is proposed by combining the characteristics of offshore wind turbine semi-submersible floating platforms. Based on the coupled hydrodynamic, aerodynamic, and mooring force physical fields of FAST, the surge, heave, pitch, and yaw motions responses of the floating wind turbine under different wave heights and periods are obtained, and the mooring line tension responses are also obtained; and compare the dynamic response of the new semi-submersible platform with the OC4-DeepCwind platform at More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.11, pp. 2489-2502, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.029496 - 31 October 2023

Abstract The windy environment is the main cause affecting the efficiency of offshore wind turbine installation. In order to improve the stability and efficiency of single-blade installation of offshore wind turbines under high wind speed conditions, the Stewart platform is used as an auxiliary tool to help dock the wind turbine blade in this paper. In order to verify the effectiveness of the Stewart platform for blade docking, a blade docking simulation system consisting of the Stewart platform, wind turbine blade, and wind load calculation module was built based on Simulink/Simscape Multibody. Baohua Li1, Yuanjun Dai1,2,*, Jingan Cui1, Cong Wang1, Kunju Shi1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.12, pp. 3033-3043, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.029583 - 27 October 2023

Abstract To reduce the vibration and aerodynamic noise of wind turbines, a new design is proposed relying on a blade with a bifurcated apex or tip. The performances of this wind turbine wheel are tested at the entrance of a DC (directaction) wind tunnel for different blade tip angles and varying centrifugal force and aerodynamic loads. The test results indicate that the bifurcated apex can reduce the vibration acceleration amplitude and the vibration frequency of the wind wheel. At the same time, the bifurcated apex can lower the maximum sound pressure level corresponding to the rotating More >

    Song Wang1,*, Fei Xie1, Fengye Yang1, Shengxuan Qiu1, Chuang Liu2, Tong Li3

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.10, pp. 2273-2285, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.030107 - 28 September 2023

Abstract Winding is one of the most important components in power transformers. Ensuring the health state of the winding is of great importance to the stable operation of the power system. To efficiently and accurately diagnose the disc space variation (DSV) fault degree of transformer winding, this paper presents a diagnostic method of winding fault based on the K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm and the frequency response analysis (FRA) method. First, a laboratory winding model is used, and DSV faults with four different degrees are achieved by changing disc space of the discs in the winding. Then,… More > Graphic Abstract

Numerical Simulation of Non-Gaussian Winds and Application on Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

    Shu Dai1,*, Bert Sweetman2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09687

Abstract Short-term wind process is normally assumed to be a Gaussian distribution, such as TurbSim, the widely used 3D wind field tool. Nowadays, newest researches indicate that non-Gaussian wind model is believed to be more accurate according to the field observation data. A new numerical method is proposed to generate non-Gaussian wind filed using translation process theory and spectral representation method. This study presents a comprehensive investigation on power production and blades fatigue damage of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) to the non-Gaussian wind field. The comparisons of Gaussian and non-Gaussian simulation results indicate that the More >

A Novel Finite Difference Method for Solving Nonlinear Static Beam Equations of Wind Turbine Blade Under Large Deflections

    Hang Meng1,*, Jiaxing Wu1, Guangxing Wu1, Kai Long1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09685

Abstract Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energies in the world. To generate more electricity, the wind turbines are getting larger and larger in recent decades [1]. With the wind turbine size growing, the length of the blade is getting slender. The large deflections of slender wind turbine blade will inevitably lead to geometric nonlinearities [2], e.g. nonlinear coupling between torsion and deflection, which complicates the governing equations of motion. To simplify the solution of the nonlinear equations, in the current research, a novel finite-difference method was proposed to solve the nonlinear equations… More >

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.37, No.3, pp. 2595-2608, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.037277 - 11 September 2023

Abstract Maintenance operations have a critical influence on power generation by wind turbines (WT). Advanced algorithms must analyze large volume of data from condition monitoring systems (CMS) to determine the actual working conditions and avoid false alarms. This paper proposes different support vector machine (SVM) algorithms for the prediction and detection of false alarms. K-Fold cross-validation (CV) is applied to evaluate the classification reliability of these algorithms. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data from an operating WT are applied to test the proposed approach. The results from the quadratic SVM showed an accuracy rate of More >
