    Abstract This paper addresses the mechanics of indentation-induced delamination of a coating on a multi-layered hollow cylinder, for application to toughness testing of thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. An electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) TBC system has been analyzed through a contact finite element model using a standard conical indenter impressed vertically on the top of the cylinder. Two cylinder sizes used in thermal-mechanical fatigue tests in literature have been considered in the analysis, with outer radii of 5.11 mm and 3.08 mm, and inner radii of 3.00 mm and 0.97 mm, respectively.     Abstract Little is known about in vivo menisci loads and displacements in the knee during strenuous activities. We have developed a method that combines biplane high-speed dynamic radiography (DRSA) and a subject-specific finite element model for studying in vivo meniscal behavior. In a very controlled uniaxial compression loading condition, removing of the pressure sensor from the model can result in relatively large errors in contact and cartilage stress that are not reflected in the change of meniscal displacement.     Abstract This paper deals with the application of inverse concepts in drying. The objective of the paper is estimation of the moisture diffusivity of a drying body by using only temperature measurements. Potato and apple slices have been chosen as representative drying bodies with significant shrinkage effects. A mathematical model of the drying process of shrinking bodies has been applied. The Levenberg-Marquardt method and a hybrid optimization method of minimization of the least-squares norm were used to solve the present parameter estimation problem. More >

Basements typically fill with high-temperature dense smoke rapidly during a fire, frequently generating deadly conditions that hinder escape from a fire.     Abstract The numerical implementation of the time-dependent linear viscoelastic constitutive model using object-oriented programming is discussed here. This paper is divided in two main parts: (i) a brief discussion of the numerical integration of linear viscoelastic constitutive equations, including the use of Prony series for characterization of viscoelastic materials (e.g. asphalt pavement surfaces) and (ii) the class organization and methods implemented in viscoelastic related classes of an object-oriented framework.     Abstract This paper deals with the numerical estimation of the ocean surface wind in a bay. Such estimates are very important because the wind reacts to environmental problem, such as the effects of a marine structure or a sailing ship. The estimation of the ocean surface wind was carried out in Osaka Bay in Japan using the mesoscale meteorological model MM5. The calculated numerical results were compared with the observed ones.
