    Abstract The aim of this study is to describe the ultrastructure of the hepatopancreas of P. argentinus in intermoult. P. argentinus hepatopancreas was studied using standard TEM techniques. Each tubule consists of four cellular types: E (embryonic), F (fibrillar), R (resorptive) and B (blister like). E-cells have embryonic features and some of them were found in mitosis.     Effects of filgrastim on granulopoietic cells of mice pretreated with methotrexate

    Abstract We have evaluated the effect of filgrastim on proliferation and differentiation activity of granulopoietic cells in mice pretreated with methotrexate. Filgrastim was injected daily, from day 8 to 28 after cytotoxic agent administration. The granulopoiesis changes were measured by assessment of GM-CFU cells content, marrow and spleen granuloid cells pool as well as circulating neutrophils. In MTX pretreated mice, bone marrow GM-CFU oscillating values were higher than normal values, but these changes were not followed by high proliferative activity in granuloid precursor cell compartment.     Abstract The aim of the present study was analyze, by histological and morphometrical studies, mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor queens collected from monogynic and polygynic colonies and compare their level of development. The results showed that the glands of physogastric queens from monogynic colony present a higher level of activity in relation to the queens of polygynic colonies; this is explained by the fact that just a unique queen controls the monogynic colony.     Abstract In this paper, generalized differential quadrature techniques are applied to the computation of the in-plane free vibrations of thin and thick non-uniform circular arches in undamaged and damaged configurations, when various boundary conditions are considered. Structural damage is represented by one crack in different positions and with various damage levels.     Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviour of Nitrided and Shot Peened Specimens

    Abstract In this paper the fatigue crack growth properties of a nitrided and shot-peened steel is dealt with: different peening intensities were considered and the resulting residual stresses measured by means of an X-ray diffractometer. Rotating bending fatigue tests were executed on specimens including a blind micro hole, acting as a pre-existent crack. The fracture surface of broken specimens was observed with a SEM to detect the crack growth initiation point.     Cohesive Strength and Separation Energy as Characteristic Parameters of Fracture Toughness and Their Relation to Micromechanics

    Abstract A review on phenomenological fracture criteria is given, based on the energy balance for cracked bodies, and the respective toughness parameters are related to micromechanical processes. Griffith's idea of introducing a "surface energy" and Barenblatt's concept of a "process zone" ahead of the crack tip build the foundation of modern cohesive models, which have become versatile tools for numerical simulations of crack extension.
