Composites are a combination of two or more materials yielding properties superior to those of the individual ingredients. The research thrust areas that describe interdisciplinary research in composites are as follows: Characterization of existing metal/ceramic/polymer matrix composites as well as the development of improved composites; Studies of the long term durability of composites used in the micro electronic industry and in the oil and gas industry; Development of novel polymer/ceramic super conductor composites that can be used as optical sensors; Investigation on the properties and process of metallic nanocomposites that exhibits a combination of low thermal expansion and high electrical and thermal conductivities; Investigation on room temperature and elevated temperature performance of metal matrix composites for use in structural applications; Application of nanomaterials (i.e. 1-100 nano meters size) in bumpers on cars, metal cutting tools, high energy density rechargeable batteries, solar cells and fuel cells; Polymer rheology; Recycling composite wastes. This special issue encourages faculty, doctorates, professionals and students from different engineering disciplines to work in a collaborative environment to meet the above research needs of composite industry. Let researchers conduct world class research in each of the above areas and also work in research teams at the interface between these disciplines to design and optimize new materials and machining processes that deliver performance and affordability.
