Summary

Along with the global climate change, the crisis of resources and environment has become more and more serious. How to deal with the increasingly severe resource crisis and environmental crisis has become the common responsibility of all mankind. The advantages of renewable, non-pollution, wide distribution and huge storage make the marine renewable energy (such as offshore wind energy, wave energy, tidal energy, etc.) to be a particular area of interest. Power generation is the principal mode of marine renewable energy utilization. And marine renewable energy also has wide applications in water pumping, heating, etc. The marine renewable energy can provide the solutions of most practical value and so meet urgent demands associated with problems such as coastal cities with a high demand for electricity, thereby closing the huge energy gap, and can serve remote islands, lighthouses at sea, marine weather buoys, and other power supply scenarios in marine areas. This largely impeded the economic leap of the coastal city and rural island, meanwhile this predicament promises offshore wind and wave power with broad prospects. Consequently, the promise of abundant marine renewable energy has become a particular area of interest for developed countries.

The full development of marine renewable energy resources will make positive contribution to is conducive to alleviating the resource crisis, protecting the marine ecology, improving the quality of life of the residents, carrying out tourism and sightseeing, enhancing the living ability of remote islands and so on. However, the regional and seasonal differences and instability also enhance the difficulty of energy development. The basic principle should be ‘resource evaluation and planning ahead’. Previous researches have made great contribution to the marine renewable energy evaluation of global oceans. However, there are still bottlenecks in the detailed investigation of spatial-temporal characteristics, energy classification, environmental risk assessment and early warning and so on, which seriously restrict the scientific site selection, daily operation and risk avoidance of marine renewable energy development. The purpose of this special issue is to explore the technologies of marine renewable energy classification, short-term forecasting, mid-long term prediction, big data construction of marine renewable, etc., to provide reference for power plant site location, daily operation and long-term planning of marine renewable energy utilization, thus to accelerate its industrialization. The above work can provide scientific reference for the decision makers, researchers and engineers engaged in the marine renewable energy development, thus to make positive contribution to the sustainable development and common prosperity and progress of human society.
