Butyrophilin Downregulation in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia: An Important Barrier to γδ T Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity

Natalia Lehman, Agnieszka Bojarska-Junak, Michał Zarobkiewicz*

    BIOCELL, Vol.49, No.6, pp. 1085-1099, 2025, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2025.063960 - 24 June 2025

Abstract Introduction: Butyrophilins (BTNs) belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily; they play crucial roles in immune regulation, especially in γδ T cell activation. While their expression has been studied in solid tumours, their involvement in hematologic malignancies remains poorly understood. Objectives: We hypothesised that BTNs are dysregulated in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), contributing to γδ T cell dysfunction and potentially influencing disease progression. Methods: In this study, we analyzed publicly available microarray and RNA-seq datasets to investigate the expression patterns of BTN genes in CLL. Results: Our findings reveal significant dysregulation of BTN gene expression in CLL, with BTN2A1, BTN3A1, BTN3A2,… More >

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.4, pp. 785-797, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2024.047021 - 20 March 2024

Abstract Cytochromes P450 (CYPs) play a prominent role in catalyzing phase I xenobiotic biotransformation and account for about 75% of the total metabolism of commercially available drugs, including chemotherapeutics. The gene expression and enzyme activity of CYPs are variable between individuals, which subsequently leads to different patterns of susceptibility to carcinogenesis by genotoxic xenobiotics, as well as differences in the efficacy and toxicity of clinically used drugs. This research aimed to examine the presence of the CYP2B6*9 polymorphism and its possible association with the incidence of B-CLL in Egyptian patients, as well as the clinical outcome after… More > Graphic Abstract

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma presenting as acute renal failure

    Zachary Snow1, Lauren S. Jones2, Javier Piraino1, Matthew Sterling1

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 11036-11039, 2022

Abstract Lymphoma of the urinary bladder is quite rare, accounting for a small percentage of all bladder neoplasms. Here we discuss the case of a 68-year-old male patient who initially presented with acute renal failure and severe bilateral hydronephrosis on ultrasound. Cross-sectional imaging further revealed a diffusely thickened bladder wall with extensive retroperitoneal and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Bladder biopsies ultimately led to a diagnosis of stage IV chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL). This is a rare instance of upper tract dilatation being the first sign of a widely disseminated hematologic malignancy. More >

Abstract White Blood Cell (WBC) cancer or leukemia is one of the serious cancers that threaten the existence of human beings. In spite of its prevalence and serious consequences, it is mostly diagnosed through manual practices. The risks of inappropriate, sub-standard and wrong or biased diagnosis are high in manual methods. So, there is a need exists for automatic diagnosis and classification method that can replace the manual process. Leukemia is mainly classified into acute and chronic types. The current research work proposed a computer-based application to classify the disease. In the feature extraction stage, we… More >
