A new modelling approach based on Binary Model and X-FEM to investigate the mechanical behaviour of textile reinforced composites

    G. Haasemann1, M. Kästner2, V. Ulbricht3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.1, pp. 35-58, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.035

Abstract The purpose of this paper is the presentation of a new efficient modelling strategy based on the combination of Binary Model and Extended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). It is applied to represent the internal architecture of textile reinforced composites where the resin-saturated fabric is characterised by a complex geometry. Homogenisation methods are used to compute the effective elastic material properties. Thereby, the discrete formulation of periodic boundary conditions is adapted regarding additional degrees of freedom used by finite elements which are based on the X-FEM. Finally, the results in terms of effective material properties reveal More >

    M. Patrício1, R. Mattheij1, G. de With2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 69-94, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.041.069

Abstract In this paper the effect of the local structure of a highly heterogeneous composite material on the parameters that characterise crack propagation is analysed. The evaluation of stress intensity factors is discussed. A hybrid approach based on domain decomposition and homogenisation methods is employed to obtain accurate solutions with reduced computational complexity. More >

Synthesis of Nanocomposite Materials Using the Reprecipitation Method

    Edward Van Keuren1, MakiNishida1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.14, No.1, pp. 61-78, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.014.061

Abstract Room temperature solution-based synthetic methods are an important option for the production of a wide range of nanomaterials. These methods often rely on self-assembly or self-organization of molecular precursors, with specific control of their nucleation and growth properties. We are developing strategies for the creation of multifunctional composite nanoparticles as well as models for predicting the bulk properties from the individual components and parameters of the processing conditions. One method of synthesis is a reprecipitation technique in which nanoparticle nucleation and growth is induced by the rapid injection of a molecular solution into a miscible… More >

Hydroplaning Analysis for Tire Rolling over Water Film with Various Thicknesses Using the LS-DYNA Fluid-Structure Interactive Scheme

    Syh-Tsang Jenq1,2, Yuen-Sheng Chiu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 33-58, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.033

Abstract Current work studies the transient hydroplaning behavior of 200 kPa inflated pneumatic radial tires with various types of tread patterns. Tires were numerically loaded with a quarter car weight of 4 kN, and then accelerated from rest rolling over a water film with a thickness of 5, 10 and 15 mm on top of a flat pavement. Tire structure is composed of outer rubber tread and inner fiber reinforcing composite layers. The Mooney-Rivlin constitutive law and the classical laminated theory (CLT) were, respectively, used to describe the mechanical behavior of rubber material and composite reinforcing… More >

Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Micromechanical Analysis of Periodic Composites Including Shear Loadings

    Thi D. Dang1, Bhavani V. Sankar2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 169-188, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.026.169

Abstract In this paper the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is used in the micromechanical analysis of a unidirectional fiber composite. The methods have been extended to include shear loadings, thus permitting a more complete micromechanical analysis of the composite subjected to combined loading states. The MLPG formulation is presented for the analysis of the representative volume element (RVE) of the periodic composite containing material discontinuities. Periodic boundary conditions are imposed between opposite faces of the RVE. The treatment of periodic boundary conditions in the MLPG method is handled by using the multipoint constraint technique. Weight And Reliability Optimization Of A Helicopter Composite Armor Using Dynamic Programming

    V.C. Santos1, P.S. Lopes1, R. Gärtner2, A.B. Jorge1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 53-58, 2007, DOI:10.3970/icces.2007.004.053

Abstract This work presents an approach for weight and reliability optimization of aeronautical armors. Military and police helicopters are usually exposed to highly risky situations, with a high probability for these aircrafts to be hit by projectiles. In this context, floor aircraft armor can be used to protect the crews' lives. However, the armoring of an aircraft causes an increase in weight. If this extra weight is poorly arranged, the changes in aircraft centroid position may even destabilize the aircraft. Thus, it is essential to design an armor not only to protect the aircraft, but also… More >

An Elastic-Plastic Constitutive Equation Taking Account of Particle Size and Its Application to A Homogenized Finite Element Analysis of A Composite Material

    Shuji Takashima1, Michihiko Nakagaki2, Noriyuki Miyazaki1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 193-202, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.020.193

Abstract Composite materials have complicated microstructures. These microstructures affect the macroscopic deformation of composite materials. In the present study, we focus on the effect of particle size in a particle-dispersed composite material on the mechanical strength of the material. For this purpose, we derived a macroscopic elastic-plastic constitutive equation using a modified version of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method combined with the gradient plasticity. We incorporated this macroscopic elastic-plastic constitutive equation into a finite element program and performed a homogenized finite element analysis of a particle-dispersed composite material in which both the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors More >

Experimental Analysis on Durability of Brick-Masonry Panels Subjected to Cyclic Loads

    R.S. Olivito1, F.A. Zuccarello1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 19-28, 2006, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2006.002.019

Abstract During the last decades FRP materials have been utilized in many civil engineering applications for their good performances in substituting traditional restoration techniques, especially in reinforcing and restoring damaged structures. At present, the use of composite materials is greatly increasing as a consequence of the fact that conservation and restoration of existing historic heritage are becoming key issues for civil engineers and architects. This paper deals with the behavior of brick masonry models subjected to cyclic loads with the aim of studying their performances and durability. Firstly the models were damaged by imposing a strain More >

Progression of failure in fiber-reinforced materials

    R. Han1, M.S. Ingber1, H.L. Schreyer1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.4, No.3, pp. 163-176, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.004.163

Abstract Decohesion is an important failure mode associated with fiber-reinforced composite materials. Analysis of failure progression at the fiber-matrix interfaces in fiber-reinforced composite materials is considered using a softening decohesion model consistent with thermodynamic concepts. In this model, the initiation of failure is given directly by a failure criterion. Damage is interpreted by the development of a discontinuity of displacement. The formulation describing the potential development of damage is governed by a discrete decohesive constitutive equation. Numerical simulations are performed using the direct boundary element method. Incremental decohesion simulations illustrate the progressive evolution of debonding zones More >
