Differential Evolution Algorithm Based Self-adaptive Control Strategy for Fed-batch Cultivation of Yeast

    Aiyun Hu1, Sunli Cong1,*, Jian Ding2, Yao Cheng1, Enock Mpofu3

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 65-77, 2021, DOI:10.32604/csse.2021.016404 - 01 April 2021

Abstract In the fed-batch cultivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, excessive glucose addition leads to increased ethanol accumulation, which will reduce the efficiency of glucose utilization and inhibit product synthesis. Insufficient glucose addition limits cell growth. To properly regulate glucose feed, a different evolution algorithm based on self-adaptive control strategy was proposed, consisting of three modules (PID, system identification and parameter optimization). Performance of the proposed and conventional PID controllers was validated and compared in simulated and experimental cultivations. In the simulation, cultivation with the self-adaptive control strategy had a more stable glucose feed rate and concentration, more stable More >

Online AUV Path Replanning Using Quantum-Behaved Particle Swarm Optimization with Selective Differential Evolution

    Hui Sheng Lim1,*, Christopher K. H. Chin1, Shuhong Chai1, Neil Bose1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.125, No.1, pp. 33-50, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.011648 - 18 September 2020

Abstract This paper presents an online AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) path planner that employs path replanning approach and the SDEQPSO (selective differential evolution-hybridized quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization) algorithm to optimize an AUV mission conducted in an unknown, dynamic and cluttered ocean environment. The proposed path replanner considered the effect of ocean currents in path optimization to generate a Pareto-optimal path that guides the AUV to its target within minimum time. The optimization was based on the onboard sensor data measured from the environment, which consists of a priori unknown dynamic obstacles and spatiotemporal currents. Different sensor… More >

Optimized PID Controller Using Adaptive Differential Evolution with Meanof-pbest Mutation Strategy

    Ti-Hung Chen1, Ming-Feng Yeh2,*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 407-420, 2020, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2020.013917

Abstract On the basis of JADE (adaptive differential evolution with optional external archive) and the modified differential evolution with p-best crossover (MDE_pBX), this study attempts to propose a modified mutation strategy termed "DE/(pbest)/1" for the differential evolution (DE) algorithm, where “(pbest)” represents the mean of p top-best vectors. Two modified parameter adaptation mechanisms are also proposed to update the crossover rate and the scale factor, respectively, in an adaptive manner. The DE variant with the proposed mutation strategy and two modified adaptation mechanisms is termed adaptive differential evolution with mean-of-pbest mutation strategy, denoted by ADE_pBM is comparable to or More >

Optimization of Well Position and Sampling Frequency for Groundwater Monitoring and Inverse Identification of Contamination Source Conditions Using Bayes’ Theorem

    Shuangsheng Zhang1,5, Hanhu Liu1, Jing Qiang2,*, Hongze Gao3,*, Diego Galar4, Jing Lin4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.119, No.2, pp. 373-394, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.03825

Abstract Coupling Bayes’ Theorem with a two-dimensional (2D) groundwater solute advection-diffusion transport equation allows an inverse model to be established to identify a set of contamination source parameters including source intensity (M ), release location ( X0 , Y0) and release time (T0), based on monitoring well data. To address the issues of insufficient monitoring wells or weak correlation between monitoring data and model parameters, a monitoring well design optimization approach was developed based on the Bayesian formula and information entropy. To demonstrate how the model works, an exemplar problem with an instantaneous release of a contaminant in… More >

Qamar Abbasa, Jamil Ahmadb, Hajira Jabeena

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.24, No.2, pp. 377-390, 2018, DOI:10.1080/10798587.2017.1295678

Abstract This paper presents a novel random controlled pool base differential evolution algorithm (RCPDE) where powerful mutation strategy and control parameter pools have been used. The mutation strategy pool contains mutations strategies having diverse parameter values, whereas the control parameter pool contains varying nature pairs of control parameter values. It has also been observed that with the addition of rarely used control parameter values in these pools are highly beneficial to enhance the performance of the DE algorithm. The proposed mutation strategy and control parameter pools improve the solution quality and the convergence speed of DE More >

Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution Based on the Concept of Population Diversity Applied to Simultaneous Estimation of Anisotropic Scattering Phase Function, Albedo and Optical Thickness

    F. S. Lobato1, V. Steffen Jr2, A. J. Silva Neto3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.69, No.1, pp. 1-18, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.069.001

Abstract Differential Evolution Algorithm (DE) has shown to be a powerful evolutionary algorithm for global optimization in a variety of real world problems. DE differs from other evolutionary algorithms in the mutation and recombination phases. Unlike some other meta-heuristic techniques such as genetic algorithms and evolutionary strategies, where perturbation occurs in accordance with a random quantity, DE uses weighted differences between solution vectors to perturb the population. Although the efficiency of DE algorithm has been proven in the literature, studies indicate that the efficiency of the DE methods is sensitive to its control parameters (perturbation rate More >

    V.C. Mariani1, V. J. Neckel2, L. S. Coelho3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.68, No.2, pp. 167-184, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.068.167

Abstract In this study an inverse heat conduction problem using two optimization methods to estimate apparent thermal diffusivity at different drying temperatures is solved. Temperature and moisture versus time were obtained numerically using heat and mass transfer equations with drying temperatures in the range between 20°C to 70°C. The solution of the partial differential equation is made with a finite difference method coupled to optimization techniques of Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) used in inverse problem. Statistical analysis shows no significant differences between reported and estimated curves, and no remarkable differences between results More >

Inverse Solution of a Chromatography Model by means of Evolutionary Computation

    M. Irízar, L. D. Câmara, A. J. Silva Neto, O. Llanes

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.54, No.1, pp. 1-14, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.054.001

Abstract Modeling of Chromatography allows a better understanding and development of new techniques to be applied at industrial level, although it's relatively complex. The models of this process are represented by systems of partial differential equations with non linear parameters difficult to estimate generally, which constitutes an inverse problem. In general there aren't analytical solutions and therefore numerical methods should be used for their direct solutions. Frequently typical boundary conditions are considered, but it's convenient to study different approaches for those. Evolutionary Computation has been used successfully in many problems of diverse areas for searching in More >
