Weida Wu, Yiqiang Wang, Zhonghao Gao, Pai Liu*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.2, pp. 2001-2026, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.046670

Abstract Negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) metamaterials are attractive for their unique mechanical behaviors and potential applications in deformation control and energy absorption. However, when subjected to significant stretching, NPR metamaterials designed under small strain assumption may experience a rapid degradation in NPR performance. To address this issue, this study aims to design metamaterials maintaining a targeted NPR under large deformation by taking advantage of the geometry nonlinearity mechanism. A representative periodic unit cell is modeled considering geometry nonlinearity, and its topology is designed using a gradient-free method. The unit cell microstructural topologies are described with the material-field series-expansion (MFSE) method. The… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.9, pp. 2215-2228, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.027188

Abstract The main structural parameters of the IR100-80-100A type chemical centrifugal pump have been optimized by means of an orthogonal test approach. The centrifugal pump has been modeled using the CFturbo software, and 16 sets of orthogonal-test schemes have been defined on the basis of 4 parameters, namely, the blade number, blade outlet angle, impeller outlet diameter, and impeller outlet width. Such analysis has been used to determine the influence of each index parameter on the pump working efficiency and identify a set of optimal combinations of such parameters. The internal flow field in the centrifugal pump has been simulated by… More > Graphic Abstract

Multi-Stage Improvement of Marine Predators Algorithm and Its Application

    Chuandong Qin, Baole Han*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.136, No.3, pp. 3097-3119, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.026643

Abstract The metaheuristic algorithms are widely used in solving the parameters of the optimization problem. The marine predators algorithm (MPA) is a novel population-based intelligent algorithm. Although MPA has shown a talented foraging strategy, it still needs a balance of exploration and exploitation. Therefore, a multi-stage improvement of marine predators algorithm (MSMPA) is proposed in this paper. The algorithm retains the advantage of multi-stage search and introduces a linear flight strategy in the middle stage to enhance the interaction between predators. Predators further away from the historical optimum are required to move, increasing the exploration capability of the algorithm. In the… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.5, pp. 2333-2344, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.026137

Abstract In order to improve the fire resistance, water resistance and wear resistance of ordinary plywood products in the wood processing industry, three composite structures of plywood products S1, S2 and S3 were designed in this paper, and a reasonable production process was proposed. Through the physical and mechanical properties and fire resistance testing and technical and economic analysis, the applicability of composite plywood was evaluated. The results of the study showed that the physical mechanics of the three kinds of composite structure plywood met the standard requirements, and their fire resistance was far better than that of ordinary plywood. Engineered Wood/Bamboo Laminated Composites for Outdoor Hydrophilic Platforms: Structural Design and Performance

Lifeng Ji, Qiuxia Zhang, Fei Rao*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.9, pp. 2477-2487, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.021761

Abstract Landscape designers increasingly prefer to use wood/bamboo-based composites for outdoor hydrophilic platforms owing to their natural surface texture, high performance, and sustainability to facilitate extensive interaction between people and water and enable the full range of ecological functions of water resources. In this study, four laminated composite (LC) structures were designed and manufactured using fluffed bamboo and wood veneers. Their surface textures, profile densities, water resistances, and mechanical properties were then evaluated. The type of fluffed veneer of the surface layer determined the texture of the LC surface. The specific structures of fluffed bamboo and wood veneer laminations were found… More >

Structural Design and Analysis of a Booster Arm Made of a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composite Material

Songhua Hu*, Lixiong Sun, Hongying Xiong*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.4, pp. 1083-1088, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.019038

Abstract An analysis of a booster arm made of a carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite material is conducted by means of a finite element analysis method. The mechanical properties are also determined through stretching and compression performance tests. It is found that the surface treatment of the fibers causes the silane coupling agent to undergo a chemical reaction on the surface of the glass fiber. The used material succeeds in producing significant vibrations damping (vibration attenuation effect is superior to that obtained with conventional alloy materials). More >

Abstract Small moving vehicles represent an important category of marine engineering tools and devices (equipment) typically used for ocean resource detection and maintenance of marine rights and interests. The lack of efficient power supply modes is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting the effective utilisation of this type of equipment. In this work, the performance characteristics of a new type of elastic-blade/wave-energy converter (EBWEC) and its core energy conversion component (named wave energy absorber) are comprehensively studied. In particular, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experiments have been used to analyze the hydrodynamics and performance characteristics of the EBWEC. The pressure… More >

Design and Experiment-Based Optimization of High-Flow Hydraulic One-Way Valves

    Lei Liu*, Ping Yu

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 211-224, 2020, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2020.08168

Abstract High-flow hydraulic one-way valves in water pipes are typically used to mitigate conditions, which would otherwise cause vibration and cavitation erosion after long-term operation. To prevent cavitation and enhance the performance of hydraulic one-way valves, in the present work a dedicated experimental study has been conducted. The structural parameters relating to the pilot valve core, the main valve core, and the through-flow section of the considered flow channel have been changed to analyse reverse impact, and cavitation, characteristics. The results show that the control pressure has a weak effect on the cavitation characteristics, while changes in the structural parameters can… More >

    Yingjun Wang1, Zhongyuan Liao1, Shengyu Shi1, *, Zhenpei Wang2, *, Leong Hien Poh3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.122, No.2, pp. 433-458, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.08680

Abstract Focusing on the structural optimization of auxetic materials using data-driven methods, a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) based design framework is developed for petal-shaped auxetics using isogeometric analysis. Adopting a NURBS-based parametric modelling scheme with a small number of design variables, the highly nonlinear relation between the input geometry variables and the effective material properties is obtained using BPNN-based fitting method, and demonstrated in this work to give high accuracy and efficiency. Such BPNN-based fitting functions also enable an easy analytical sensitivity analysis, in contrast to the generally complex procedures of typical shape and size sensitivity approaches. More >
