In 2026, Charleston Conference Asia marked the conference’s first expansion into the Asian region, bringing together nearly 700 publishing, library, and research professionals from around the world and providing a high-impact platform for strategic dialogue, innovation, and collaboration across the global scholarly publishing ecosystem.

During the session, John Chen discussed how paper mills are evolving in the age of artificial intelligence, including the use of text generation, image manipulation, and automated metadata workflows to scale operations and circumvent editorial screening. He also shared insights based on Tech Science Press’s operational experience in identifying and responding to integrity concerns, and outlined practical approaches for strengthening editorial safeguards, data-informed monitoring, and cross-industry collaboration.
The session highlighted the growing importance of proactive integrity measures in scholarly publishing and the need for the community to continuously strengthen its approaches in response to emerging AI-enabled risks..
