Advanced Thermochemical Conversion Approaches for Green Hydrogen Production from Crop Residues

Omojola Awogbemi*, Ayotunde Adigun Ojo, Samson Adedayo Adeleye

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 1-28, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.045822

Abstract The huge volumes of crop residues generated during the production, processing, and consumption of farm products constitute an ecological nuisance when ineffectively managed. The conversion of crop residues to green hydrogen is one of the sustainable management strategies for ubiquitous crop residues. Production of green hydrogen from crop residue sources will contribute to deepening access to clean and affordable energy, mitigating climate change, and ensuring environmental sustainability. However, the deployment of conventional thermochemical technologies for the conversion of crop residues to green hydrogen is costly, requires long residence time, produces low-quality products, and therefore needs to be upgraded. The current… More >

Abstract In order to study the combustion characteristics of tar in biomass gasifier inner wall and gasification gas, “tobacco stem semi-tar inside furnace”, “tobacco stem tar inside furnace” and “tobacco stem tar out-of-furnace” were subjected to thermogravimetric experiments, and the combustion characteristics and kinetic characteristics were analyzed. The result shows that “tobacco stem semi-tar inside furnace” has the highest value and “tobacco stem tar out-of-furnace” is has the lowest value on ignition characteristics, combustion characteristics and combustible stability; “tobacco stem semi-tar inside furnace” has the lowest value and “tobacco stem tar outside furnace” has the highest value on burnout characteristics; “tobacco… More > Graphic Abstract

Spatio-Temporal Characteristics of Heat Transfer of Methanation in Fluidized Bed for Pyrolysis and Gasification Syngas of Organic Solid Waste

    Danyang Shao1, Xiaojia Wang1,*, Delu Chen1, Fengxia An1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.10, pp. 3659-3680, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.029220

Abstract Methanation is an effective way to efficiently utilize product gas generated from the pyrolysis and gasification of organic solid wastes. To deeply study the heat transfer and mass transfer mechanisms in the reactor, a successful three-dimensional comprehensive model has been established. Multiphase flow behavior and heat transfer mechanisms were investigated under reference working conditions. Temperature is determined by the heat release of the reaction and the heat transfer of the gas-solid flow. The maximum temperature can reach 951 K where the catalyst gathers. In the simulation, changes in the gas inlet velocity and catalyst flow rate were made to explore… More >

Simulation Research on Coal-Water Slurry Gasification of Oil-Based Drill Cuttings Based on Fluent

Liang Hu, Hailong Yu*, Liuyang Huang, Yayun Xu, Xulei Wu, Yunlan Sun, Baozhong Zhu

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.9, pp. 1963-1977, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.027897

Abstract In this paper, based on Fluent software, a five-nozzle gasifier reactor was established to simulate the gasification process of oil-based drill cuttings coal-water slurry. The influence of concentration and oxygen/carbon atomic ratio on the gasification process of oil-based drill cuttings coal-water slurry was investigated. The results show that when the oxygen flow is constant, the outlet temperature of gasifier decreases, the content of effective gas increases, and the carbon conversion rate decreases with the increase of concentration; When the ratio of oxygen to carbon atoms is constant, the effective gas content rises and the temperature rises with the increase of… More > Graphic Abstract

Gasification of Organic Waste: Parameters, Mechanism and Prediction with the Machine Learning Approach

    Feng Gao1,2,*, Liang Bao3, Qin Wang4

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.6, pp. 2771-2786, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.027325

Abstract Gasification of organic waste represents one of the most effective valorization pathways for renewable energy and resources recovery, while this process can be affected by multi-factors like temperature, feedstock, and steam content, making the product’s prediction problematic. With the popularization and promotion of artificial intelligence such as machine learning (ML), traditional artificial neural networks have been paid more attention by researchers from the data science field, which provides scientific and engineering communities with flexible and rapid prediction frameworks in the field of organic waste gasification. In this work, critical parameters including temperature, steam ratio, and feedstock during gasification of organic… More >

Production of Producer Gas from Densified Agricultural Biomass in Downdraft Gasifier and Its Application to Small Diesel Engines

    Kittikorn Sasujit1,*, Nigran Homdoung1, Nakorn Tippayawong2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.5, pp. 2149-2167, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.022069

Abstract Biomass is becoming one of the most popular renewable energy sources, especially from agricultural wastes. These wastes can be gasified and utilized in various industries. This experimental study investigated producer gas generation from densified agricultural fuels such as corncobs, rice husks, wood chips, and oil palm fronds in a 50 kWth throatless downdraft gasifier. This system produced combustible gases such as H2, CO, and CH4, which were utilized as a substitute for diesel fuel in a small diesel engine for power generation. The results showed that the gasifier performs successfully and seems to prefer pellets to briquettes. Producer gas contains 18%–20%… More >

Techno-Economic Analysis of a Grid-Connected Waste to Energy Gasification Plant: A Case Study

Ahmed Abubakar Elwan*, Mohammed Hafiz Habibuddin

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.6, pp. 1681-1701, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.016291

Abstract With population growth around the world, municipal waste disposal and continued energy demand becomes some of the major challenges to deal with. In order to address these, an approach is required for an optimal waste management system that offers the population benefit with a lower environmental impact. This study evaluates the technical-economic and environmental impact analysis of a grid-connected waste to energy (WtE) plant to power a Univerisiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) community. The energy recovery potential of the waste stream was assessed using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method with GaBiTM software (version 4). A technical, economic and environmental analysis… More >

Naoto Mitsume*, Tomonori Yamada, Shinobu Yoshimura

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 65-65, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05538

Abstract Research and development with regard to advanced coal-fired power plants to reduce CO2 emission have been conducted. Coal gasification is one of the key technologies. In reactor for the coal gasification, coal is crushed into fine particulate matter and then partially burned into gas in a high-pressure environment in the reactor. Our research group has carried out a project to tackle a coupled problem of thermo-fluid-structure interaction for quantification of its efficiency, environmental load, and structural integrity. As one of key components of the project, we present a large-scale parallel simulation of three-dimensional (3D) thermal conduction in a gasification vessel.… More >
