    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.5, pp. 1329-1347, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.026888

Abstract This present study includes twelve species that represent the Ficus genus, namely; aspera, carica, tinctoria subsp. gibbosa, hirta, hispida, neriifolia, palmata, pumila, racemosa, septica, sur, and sycomorus, belonging to the Moraceae family. The species samples were collected from various locations in Egypt. The study focused on the anatomical and molecular characteristics of mature foliage leaves. Since the identification and classification of taxa are highly dependent on the anatomical features of leaves, the anatomical characteristics were recorded in the form of a comparison between the examined plants in the data matrix. This study aims to contribute to the identification of the… More >

Assessment of the Contribution of Foliar Trichomes towards Allelopathy

    Waseem Mushtaq1, M.B. Siddiqui1, Hesham F. Alharby2, Khalid Rehman Hakeem2,3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.2, pp. 291-301, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.08740

Abstract Plant trichomes vary in their structure and cellular composition. Glandular trichomes contain a bulk of specific (secondary) metabolites of diverse nature. Trichomes are connected with various adaptive processes, which include protection against herbivores and pathogens as well. Our study investigates the allelopathic contribution of structures present on the leaf surface of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv. against seedling growth of Cicer arietinum L. The infusion obtained after dipping Nicotiana leaves in Dichloromethane (DCM) for 10 seconds (s) was the most phytotoxic among all the infusions. The observed inhibition in Cicer growth was not only dependent on type of infusion but also the… More >

Leaf surfaces of Gomphrena spp. (Amaranthaceae) from Cerrado biome

    BIOCELL, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 23-36, 2010, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2010.34.023

Abstract The leaf structure and micromorphology characterize plant species and reflex its interactions with the environment. Leaf epidermis sculptures aid high transpiration plants on light reflection. The form and distribution of epicuticular wax crystalloids are important to characterize the surface. Aiming to know the micromorphology and the ultrastructure of G. arborescens, G. pohlii and G. virgata, leaves of these Cerrado native species were collected in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil, at the Olympic Center of the Universidade de Brasília and at Reserva Ecológica do Roncador. Leaves of G. globosa, an Indian native species, were also studied for comparison. Leaves were fractionated, fixed… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 306-317, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.306

Abstract The genus Vicia L. belongs to the tribe Vicieae of the Fabaceae family. The genus includes about 190 species, from which about 40 species have economic importance. Some of them are food crops, but more than a dozen are forage plants. In this study, leaves of Vicia species from China, USA and Argentina were examined using stereo-microscopy and light microscopy. We determined macro- and micro-morphological characteristics that could be of taxonomic use. Forty eight characteristics of each taxon were determined including petiole and tendril length; leaflets number, length, width, shape, apex, base; blade surface, trichome shape, type, base and length;… More >
