Determination of the Size Effect Law with One-Size Concrete Specimens of Different Notch Depths

    H. Cifuentes1, F. Medina2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 197-202, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.197

Abstract The most popular expression that considers the size effect showed in concrete structures is the size effect law of Bazant. This law depends on two coefficients Gf and cf. For the experimental determination of these coefficients is necessary obtaining the ultimate loads, in three points bending tests, of notched beams with different sizes. In this work, a method to determine the coefficients about the results on identical beams varying the deep of the notch, is presented. The necessary values of loads are obtained by a numerical analysis with FEM that considers non linear behaviour of the concrete material. Next the… More >

Suppression Capability Investigation for a Water Mist System in a Basement Building Fire

    S.C. Wang1, C.S. Lin2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 189-196, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.189

Abstract Protecting against basement fires in commercial buildings is of major concern in Taiwan. Basements typically fill with high-temperature dense smoke rapidly during a fire, frequently generating deadly conditions that hinder escape from a fire. The water-mist fire suppression system (WMFSS) is a highly efficient fire suppression device that enhances the safety of people during a basement fire. The tiny water droplets with various diameters can absorb large amount of heat and the water vapors can prevent the occurrence of flashover during a building fire. This study investigates fire-suppression characteristics using a WMFSS in a basement barbershop fire accident in Taiwan.… More >

Implementation of a Viscoelastic Constitutive Model Using the Object-Oriented Programming Approach

    H. N. Silva1, J. B. Soares1, E. Parente Jr.2, P. C. Sousa1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 181-188, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.181

Abstract The numerical implementation of the time-dependent linear viscoelastic constitutive model using object-oriented programming is discussed here. This paper is divided in two main parts: (i) a brief discussion of the numerical integration of linear viscoelastic constitutive equations, including the use of Prony series for characterization of viscoelastic materials (e.g. asphalt pavement surfaces) and (ii) the class organization and methods implemented in viscoelastic related classes of an object-oriented framework. The implementation is part of an ongoing development Finite Element (FE) computer system for pavement analysis and research. More >

Evaluation of fiber dispersion of PVA-ECC

    Y. Y. Kim1, B. Y. Lee2, J. K. Kim2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 167-172, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.167

Abstract The fiber dispersion performance in fiber-reinforced cementitious composites is a crucial factor with respect to achieving desired mechanical performance. However, evaluation of the fiber dispersion performance in the composite PVA-ECC (Polyvinyl alcohol-Engineered Cementitious Composite) is extremely challenging because of the low contrast of PVA fibers with the cement-based matrix. In the present work, an enhanced image processing technique including more detailed classification of types of fibers and adaptation of a morphological reconstruction, the fiber detection performance is enhanced. Test results using artificial and real fiber images showed that a distribution coefficient αf, referred to as the fiber dispersion coefficient was… More >

Numerical Prediction of the Ocean Surface Wind in a Bay and Application for Ship Navigation

    S. Shiotani1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 159-166, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.159

Abstract This paper deals with the numerical estimation of the ocean surface wind in a bay. Such estimates are very important because the wind reacts to environmental problem, such as the effects of a marine structure or a sailing ship. The estimation of the ocean surface wind was carried out in Osaka Bay in Japan using the mesoscale meteorological model MM5. The calculated numerical results were compared with the observed ones. It was confirmed that the ocean surface wind in Osaka Bay was accurately estimated. As an application of the estimation of wind in the bay, navigational simulations of a sailing… More >

Using Post-Analyses of Optimisation Processes as an Active Computational Design Tool

    T. Kipouros1, T. Ghisu2, G. T. Parks2, A. M. Savill3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 151-158, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.151

Abstract Design optimisation techniques have proved to be very effective in the engineering design process. Turbomachinery is one of the fields with distinctive applications of such approaches. Apart from the improved efficiency of the process, significant advancements to the generic behaviour of engineering products have been recorded. Post-analyses of the optimisation processes and the optimal designs can reveal the physical mechanisms responsible for optimal behaviour characteristics, obtainable by no other means. Moreover, these findings can be deployed online in a dynamic way during the progression of the design process, in order to assist and enhance the adeptness of the computational design… More >

The Descending Aortic Aneurysm under Vascular Structure having Three-layered using FSI

    O. Ohta1, F. Gao1, T. Matsuzawa2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 146-150, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.146

Abstract The aortic disease is 2nd place of the cause of death. If the thoracic part and the dissociation are matched, the aortic aneurysm exceeds 60 percent. The aneurysm decided based on the maximum diameter of the aneurysm from the image of which it takes a picture with CT or MRI etc. as such a diagnostic indicator. The appearance of disease, the development, and the rupture of the arterial hemangioma are thought that the hemodynamics such as intravasculars and vessel walls plays an important role [1,2]. Then, we simulated the aneurysm of descending aorta in consideration of the vessel wall of… More >

On the Validity of the Fracture Mechanics Approach to Hydrogen Assisted Cracking

    J. Toribio1, V. Kharin2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 135-140, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.135

Abstract This paper deals with the meaning and significance of the fracture mechanics approach to hydrogen assisted cracking, analyzing the question of K-dominance not only over the purely mechanical aspects, but also over the environmental (physicochemical) events. Two key factors able to violate the uniqueness of the crack growth kinetics curve v = v(K) are discussed: the role of far field (the stress-strain field which is not K-dominated) and the effect of the history of hydrogenation and crack growth. The far field is shown to have a minor effect on near-tip hydrogen diffusion, and thus it can only widen the scatter… More >
