Summary
The construction sector is facing growing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint while safeguarding high performance, durability, and resource efficiency. As one of the most widely used mineral binders, gypsum offers substantial advantages including low embodied energy, rapid setting, recyclability, and compatibility with circular economy strategies. Recent advances in materials science, admixture technology, fibres reinforcement, and waste valorisation empowered the development of high-performance gypsum composites with improved mechanical, thermal, acoustic, and durability properties, opening new chances for innovative and sustainable building solutions.
This Special Issue aims to present the latest scientific and technological advances in high-performance gypsum-based materials and their provision to sustainable and circular construction. It seeks to bring together researchers, architects, engineers, and industry professionals working on the conception, design, characterization, processing, and application of advanced gypsum composites.
Suggested themes include, but are not limited to:
• Novel gypsum composites and multifunctional materials;
• Fiber-reinforced gypsum systems;
• Recycling and valorisation of industrial and construction wastes in gypsum products;
• Circular economy approaches for gypsum production and reuse;
• Aging, durability, and long-term performance;
• Acoustic, thermal, and fire-resistant properties;
• Life cycle assessment and environmental performance;
• Digital manufacturing and innovative applications of gypsum-based materials.
We look forward to your contributions to this Special Issue.
