Rising Talents in Engineering win CMES 2022 Young Researcher Award

The CMES 2022 Young Researcher Award has been conferred upon three outstanding individuals: Dr. Debiao Meng from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Dr. Shunhua Chen from Sun Yat-sen University, and Dr. Xiang Rao from Yangtze University.

Debiao Meng(University of Electronic Science and Technology of China)


Debiao Meng is an Associate Professor in School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, China. He is also a Visiting Professors in the University of Bologna, and a Visiting Research Fellow at Zigong Innovation Centre of Zhejiang University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, UESTC with a major in Mechanical Engineering (2014). From 2013 to 2015, he was a joint Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University, US. His main research field is Structural Integrity. He has published more than 40 papers in journals and conference proceedings.

Shunhua Chen (Sun Yat-sen University)


Shunhua Chen received his Ph.D. from South China University of Technology in 2016. Right after his graduation, he started working at School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, as a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Society) postdoctoral fellow for two years. From October of 2018, he continued his research in the same group as a project researcher. Since February of 2021, he started his new career as an Associate Professor at the School of Ocean Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, China. His research interests mainly include computational mechanics, fracture, composite structures, fluid-structure interactions, high-performance computing, and offshore wind turbines. He has published more than 45 journal papers, and received numerous awards including the JACM (Japan Association for Computational Mechanics) Young Investigator Award, and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Xiang Rao (Yangtze University)


Xiang Rao is an Associate Professor at the School of Petroleum Engineering, Yangtze University. He received his PhD from China University of Petroleum (Beijing) in 2020 and conducted postdoctoral research at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. He has published more than 35 technical papers. His main research interests include reservoir numerical simulation, computational geosciences, numerical methods, and quantum computing.


The CMES 2022 Young Researcher Award underscores the importance of recognizing emerging talent in research. These recipients exemplify the dedication, innovation, and excellence that define the future of academic and research endeavors. As rising stars in engineering, Dr. Debiao Meng, Dr. Shunhua Chen, and Dr. Xiang Rao serve as inspirations to their peers and aspiring researchers.
