Long Li, Yanan Lu, Yu Chen, Jiayi Bian, Li Wang, Li Li*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.021456

Abstract Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are an effective antibacterial agent, but their application in food packaging is limited due to their easy agglomeration and oxidation. In this study, antibacterial microcapsules were fabricated using Ginkgo biloba essential oil (GBEO) as core material and chitosan and type B gelatin biopolymer as capsule materials. These antibacterial microcapsules were then modified with green-synthesized Ag NPs, blended into the biopolymer polylactic acid (PLA), and finally formed as films. Physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were evaluated. Results showed that the prepared antibacterial PLA films exhibited excellent antibacterial More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023151

Abstract The aim of this research work was to evaluate the potential of using renewable natural feedstock, i.e., Jatropha curcas oil (JCO) for the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) resin for wood composite applications. Commercial polyurethane (PU) is synthesized through a polycondensation reaction between isocyanate and polyol. However, utilizing toxic and unsustainable isocyanates for obtaining PU could contribute to negative impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of PU from eco-friendly and sustainable resources without the isocyanate route is required. In this work, tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide was used as the activator to open the… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.021282

Abstract Coral materials can replace concrete aggregates and achieve material self-sufficiency for reducing the construction costs of island projects. This paper studies the effects of different mineral admixtures on the properties of coral aggregate concrete (CAC). The chloride concentration of CAC after different erosion times is measured using the potentiometric method, and the porosity of the CAC is calculated using thermogravimetric and drying methods. The chloride concentration of the CAC presents a two-phases distribution. The peak chloride concentration followed a power function, increasing with the erosion time. The chloride diffusion coefficient of CAC is 7.9%– 37.5% More >

Effects of Strain Rate and Fiber Content on the Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Sisal Fiber Cement-Based Composites

Yubo Zhang, Ping Lei, Lina Wang, Jiqing Yang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022659

Abstract In this paper, a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to investigate the dynamic impact mechanical behavior of sisal fiber-reinforced cement-based composites (SFRCCs), and the microscopic damage evolution of the composites was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The results show that the addition of sisal fibers improves the impact resistance of cement-based composite materials. Compared with ordinary cement-based composites (OCCs), the SFRCCs demonstrate higher post-peak strength, ductility, and energy absorption capacity with higher fiber content. Moreover, the SFRCCs are strain rate sensitive materials, and their peak stress, ultimate More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022031

Abstract Adsorption can be used to recover effectively the volatile organic gases (VOCs) in the exhaust gas from factories through using an appropriate adsorption bed. Due to form a physical or chemical bond, adsorption occurs between the porous solid medium and the liquid or gas multi-component fluid mixture. The regeneration capacity of the adsorbent is as important as the adsorption capacity and it determines the economics of the adsorption system. The regeneration of adsorbent can be realized through changing the pressure or temperature of the system. Here, activated carbon samples from coconut shell were prepared and… More >
