    SHUAI LIU1, JIANZHONG XU1,*, TINGSHAN LIU1, ZHIMING RAO2, WEIGUO ZHANG1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.10, pp. 2303-2313, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.020899

Abstract In this study, phosphoenolpyruvate and erythrose-4-phosphate are efficiently supplied by collaborative design of Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas (EMP) pathway and pentose phosphate (PP) pathway in Escherichia coli, thus increasing the L-tryptophan production. Firstly, the effects of disrupting EMP pathway on L-tryptophan production were studied, and the results indicated that the strain with deletion of phosphofructokinase A (i.e., E. coli JW-5 ΔpfkA) produced 23.4 ± 2.1 g/L of L-tryptophan production. However, deletion of phosphofructokinase A and glucosephosphate isomerase is not conducive to glucose consumption and cell growth, especially deletion of glucosephosphate isomerase. Next, the carbon flux in PP pathway was enhanced by introduction of… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.67, No.2, pp. 1369-1384, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.015116

Abstract Microfluidic channels play a vital role in separation of analytes of interest such as bacteria and platelet cells, etc., in various biochemical diagnosis procedures including urinary tract infections (UTI) and bloodstream infections. This paper presents the multi physics computational model specifically designed to study the effects of design parameters of a microfluidics channel for the separation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) from various blood constituents including red blood cells (RBC) and platelets. A standard two inlet and a two outlet microchannel of length 805 m with a channel width of 40 m is simulated. The effect of electrode potentials and… More >

Detection of new antibiotic resistance gene profile in Escherichia coli associated with avian leukosis virus infection from broiler chickens

    HAIFENG WANG1,2,*, JUAN GUO1, LIJING ZHENG1, SHUYING LIU1, ZHERONG WANG1, HONGXUAN HE2

    BIOCELL, Vol.44, No.2, pp. 217-224, 2020, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2020.09051

Abstract The Escherichia coli (E. coli) is prevailing worldwide, but the epidemiology of E. coli infections feature regional distribution characteristics to some extent. E. coli, as a zoonotic pathogen, can be transferred from animals to humans through food chain or via contact with wounds, causing a public health risk. We reported the swelling of proventriculus and tracheal bleeding following the death in two broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) from Beijing, China. To investigate whether a virus was involved in the infection, Madin Darby Bovine Kidney (MDCK) cells were co-cultured with supernatants of proventriculus, trachea and spleen homogenates. The avian leucosis virus… More >

Evaluation of a multiplex PCR method to detect enteroaggregative Escherichia coli

    M.E. RÜTTLER, C.S. YANZÓN, M.J. CUITIÑO, N.F. RENNA, M.A. PIZARRO, A.M. ORTIZ.

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 301-308, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.301

Abstract Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) has been implicated in sporadic diarrhea in children and adults and has been identified as the cause of several outbreaks worldwide. The HEp-2 test remains the gold standard for identification of this pathotype. A 60-65 MDa plasmid encodes the aggregative adherence fimbriae (AAF/I and AAF/II), a transcriptional activator (aggR gene), the enteroaggregative heat-stable enterotoxin EAST1 (astA gene) and a cytotoxin (Pet). The standard assay for EAEC is performed only in research laboratories, because it is expensive, labor intensive and time-consuming. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) offers the possibility of rapid diagnosis. In the current study, a… More >

Synergism of flavonoids with bacteriostatic action against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25 923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922

MARÍA DE LOS A. ALVAREZ, NORA B. DEBATTISTA, NORA B. PAPPANO

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 39-42, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.039

Abstract In our previous studies, bacteriostatic action of flavonoids against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25 923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922 was demostrated. In the present work synergism of their combinations in order to improve the bacteriostatic action against the same microorganisms was determined. The experiences were made in nutritive broth, maintaining constant one drug concentration (20 µg/ml) and increasing the other one. A turbidimetric kinetic method was used and by means of a mechanism previously proposed, the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC´s) of each flavonoid combination were determined. The MIC´s for assayed combinations against S. aureus were: variable morin - constant… More >

Bacteriostatic action of synthetic polyhydroxylated chalcones against Escherichia coli

MARÍA DE LOS ANGELES ALVAREZ, VALERIA E. P. ZARELLI, NORA B.PAPPANO, NORA B. DEBATTISTA

    BIOCELL, Vol.28, No.1, pp. 31-34, 2004, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2004.28.031

Abstract In previous work the bacteriostatic action of trihydroxylated chalcones against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25 923 was investigated. In this work the action of 2´, 4´, 2-(OH)3 -chalcone, 2´, 4´, 3-(OH)3- chalcone and 2´, 4´, 4-(OH)3 –chalcone against Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922 was evaluated. Growth kinetic curves of E.coli were made in nutritive broth added with increasing drug concentrations. The specific growth rates of the microorganisms were calculated by a kinetic turbidimetric method, which was previously probed and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC´s) were evaluated by a mechanism of action proposed. The MICs of 2´, 4´, 3-(OH)3 -chalcone and 2´,… More >

Fractional diffusion-advection and pattern formations of MinE Protein dynamics in Escherichia coli: experiments and theories

Sitta Aroonnual Paisan Kanthang, Wannapong Triampo1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.13, No.3, pp. 53-54, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.013.053

Abstract How does a cell successfully divide is one of very fundamental questions in biological and medical science especially concerning mechanism. With this regards, MinE proteins are very important for Escherichia coli cell division process because it supports FtsZ proteins to form at mid-cell which lead to cell division at that region. In this work, we quantitatively studied the physical properties of MinE protein clusters including pattern formations and dynamic motions using both theoretical and experimental approach. Experimentally, through the spot tracking technique (STT) and diffusion analysis, it was found that MinE globally performed oscillatory motion from middle cell to the… More >
