An Efficient 3D CNN Framework with Attention Mechanisms for Alzheimer’s Disease Classification

    Athena George1, Bejoy Abraham2, Neetha George3, Linu Shine3, Sivakumar Ramachandran4,*

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.47, No.2, pp. 2097-2118, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.039262

Abstract Neurodegeneration is the gradual deterioration and eventual death of brain cells, leading to progressive loss of structure and function of neurons in the brain and nervous system. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple system atrophy, and multiple sclerosis, are characterized by progressive deterioration of brain function, resulting in symptoms such as memory impairment, movement difficulties, and cognitive decline. Early diagnosis of these conditions is crucial to slowing down cell degeneration and reducing the severity of the diseases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used by neurologists for diagnosing brain abnormalities. The majority of the research… More >

Earlier Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease Using 3D-Convolutional Neural Networks

    V. P. Nithya*, N. Mohanasundaram, R. Santhosh

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 2601-2618, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.030503

Abstract The prediction of mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has gained the attention of huge researchers as the disease occurrence is increasing, and there is a need for earlier prediction. Regrettably, due to the high-dimensionality nature of neural data and the least available samples, modelling an efficient computer diagnostic system is highly solicited. Learning approaches, specifically deep learning approaches, are essential in disease prediction. Deep Learning (DL) approaches are successfully demonstrated for their higher-level performance in various fields like medical imaging. A novel 3D-Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) architecture is proposed to predict AD with Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data.… More >

Brain Tumor: Hybrid Feature Extraction Based on UNet and 3DCNN

    Sureshkumar Rajagopal1, Tamilvizhi Thanarajan2,*, Youseef Alotaibi3, Saleh Alghamdi4

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.2, pp. 2093-2109, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.032488

Abstract Automated segmentation of brain tumors using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data is critical in the analysis and monitoring of disease development. As a result, gliomas are aggressive and diverse tumors that may be split into intra-tumoral groups by using effective and accurate segmentation methods. It is intended to extract characteristics from an image using the Gray Level Co-occurrence (GLC) matrix feature extraction method described in the proposed work. Using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which are commonly used in biomedical image segmentation, CNNs have significantly improved the precision of the state-of-the-art segmentation of a brain tumor. Using two segmentation networks, a… More >

Engagement Detection Based on Analyzing Micro Body Gestures Using 3D CNN

    Shoroog Khenkar1,*, Salma Kammoun Jarraya1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.70, No.2, pp. 2655-2677, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.019152

Abstract This paper proposes a novel, efficient and affordable approach to detect the students’ engagement levels in an e-learning environment by using webcams. Our method analyzes spatiotemporal features of e-learners’ micro body gestures, which will be mapped to emotions and appropriate engagement states. The proposed engagement detection model uses a three-dimensional convolutional neural network to analyze both temporal and spatial information across video frames. We follow a transfer learning approach by using the C3D model that was trained on the Sports-1M dataset. The adopted C3D model was used based on two different approaches; as a feature extractor with linear classifiers and… More >

3-Dimensional Bag of Visual Words Framework on Action Recognition

    Shiqi Wang1, Yimin Yang1, *, Ruizhong Wei1, Qingming Jonathan Wu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.63, No.3, pp. 1081-1091, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.09648

Abstract Human motion recognition plays a crucial role in the video analysis framework. However, a given video may contain a variety of noises, such as an unstable background and redundant actions, that are completely different from the key actions. These noises pose a great challenge to human motion recognition. To solve this problem, we propose a new method based on the 3-Dimensional (3D) Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) framework. Our method includes two parts: The first part is the video action feature extractor, which can identify key actions by analyzing action features. In the video action encoder, by analyzing the action… More >
