Abstract In recent years, Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system gained much popularity since it aims at establishing the communication between human brain and computer. BCI systems are applied in several research areas such as neuro-rehabilitation, robots, exoeskeletons, etc. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique commonly applied in capturing brain signals. It is incorporated in BCI systems since it has attractive features such as non-invasive nature, high time-resolution output, mobility and cost-effective. EEG classification process is highly essential in decision making process and it incorporates different processes namely, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. With this motivation, the current research paper presents an Intelligent… More >

Research and Development of a Brain-Controlled Wheelchair for Paralyzed Patients

    Mohammad Monirujjaman Khan1,*, Shamsun Nahar Safa1, Minhazul Hoque Ashik1, Mehedi Masud2, Mohammed A. AlZain3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 49-64, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.016077

Abstract Smart wheelchairs play a significant role in supporting disabled people. Individuals with motor function impairments due to some disorders such as strokes or multiple sclerosis face frequent moving difficulties. Hence, they need constant support from an assistant. This paper presents a brain-controlled wheelchair model to assist disabled and paralyzed patients. The wheelchair is controlled by interpreting Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, also known as brain waves. In the EEG technique, an electrode cap is positioned on the user’s scalp to receive EEG signals, which are detected and transformed by the Arduino microcontroller into motion commands, which drive the wheelchair. The proposed wheelchair… More >

Efficient MAC Protocols for Brain Computer Interface Applications

    Shams Al Ajrawi1,*, Ramesh Rao2, Mahasweta Sarkar3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.69, No.1, pp. 589-605, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.016930

Abstract Brain computer interface (BCI) systems permit individuals with motor disorders to utilize their thoughts as a mean to control external devices. BCI is a promising interdisciplinary field that gained the attention of many researchers. Yet, the development of BCI systems is facing several challenges, such as network lifetime. The Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol is the bottle- neck of network reliability. There are many MAC protocols that can be utilized for dependable transmission in BCI applications by altering their control parameters. However, modifying these parameters is another source of concern due to the scarcity in knowledge about the effect of… More >

Analysis of Collaborative Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Based Personalized GUI for Differently Abled

    M. Umaa,c, T. Sheelab

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.24, No.4, pp. 747-757, 2018, DOI:10.1080/10798587.2017.1332804

Abstract Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) use Electroencephalography (EEG) signals recorded from the brain scalp, which enable a communication between the human and the outside world. The present study helps the patients who are people locked-in to manage their needs such as accessing of web url’s, sending/receiving sms to/from mobile device, personalized music player, personalized movie player, wheelchair control and home appliances control. In the proposed system, the user needs are designed as a button in the form of a matrix, in which the main panel of rows and columns button is flashed in 3 sec intervals. Subjects were asked to choose the… More >
