Abstract The well-known frictional effect related to liquid-liquid two-phase flow in pipelines can be reduced using drag-reducing additives. In this study, such an effect has been investigated experimentally using a mixture of oil and water. Moreover, numerical simulations have been carried out using the COMSOL simulation software. The measurements were taken in a horizontal pipe with the length and diameter equal to 3 and 0.125 m, respectively. Moreover, Polyethylene oxide with 150 ppm was exploited to reduce the drag effect while considering different water-to-oil fractions (0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.7) and a constant total flow velocity of 2.3 m/s. As made… More >

NUMERICALLY INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF FEED WATER PREHEATING TANK DESIGN ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SINGLE SLOPE SOLAR STILL

Zahraa A. Faisal*, Hassanain Ghani Hameed, Dhafer Manea H. Al-Shamkhee

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.17, pp. 1-9, 2021, DOI:10.5098/hmt.17.22

Abstract One of the common water desalination apparatuses in freshwater regimes is Single Slope Solar Still (SSSS). This paper numerically investigated the heat transfer processes that took place inside the still. Also, implementing an optimization process to explore the best sustainable feed water preheating tank design. Comsol Software package (v 5.4) was utilized to develop and validate the 3D Mathematical model. The investigation included comparing four different tank designs namely are sphere, half-sphere, cone, and flat plate. In addition, the influence of altering the volume of the tank has been considered. The study revealed that the half-sphere design with a volume… More >

CFD ANALYSIS FOR ANAEROBIC DIGESTION INSIDE A BATCH DIGESTER AUGMENTED WITH EXTENDED SURFACES

Ammar Hassan Soheela,*,†, Johain J. Farajb, Fawizea M. Hussienb

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.20, pp. 1-11, 2023, DOI:10.5098/hmt.20.3

Abstract The household batch reactor using cow manure as the substrate generates methane gas used as fuel. This paper presents two-dimensional (3D) axisymmetric using commercial COMSOL 5.5 Multiphysics software. This is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on conservation equations with the chemical reaction model of anaerobic digestion (AD) processes to investigate the influence of different horizontal circular extended surfaces augmented to the inside digesters on the performance of the anaerobic digestion. Using four batch digesters, D1 with no extended surfaces and D2, D3, and D4 have augmented with four horizontal circular extended surfaces of width 2,4 and 6 cm,… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.1, pp. 255-268, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.017313

Abstract A novel trapezoidal design for storage of heat energy through melting of phase-change material (PCM) is investigated. Latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES) is a promising option to diminish mis-match between energy consumption and supply. For this purpose, Paraffin: Rubitherm-35 (RT35) material is successively melted in aluminum structure which is heated from one side and the other sides are kept adiabatic. Melting of PCM is observed experimentally and melt fronts are photographed for various time lengths. The fluid-solid module in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4 has been utilized. The transient heat conduction with enthalpy function is hired. Simulations are carried out… More >

Structural Topology Optimization Based on the Level Set Method Using COMSOL

    Shaohua Zhang1,2, Pei Li1, Yongteng Zhong1, Jiawei Xiang1,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.101, No.1, pp. 17-31, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.101.017

Abstract In order to obtain smooth boundary and improve computational efficiency, a new topology optimization scheme based on the level set method is presented. Using the level set function as design variable and the volume ratio of the solid material as volume constraint, respectively, this scheme can easily implement compliance minimization structure topology optimization in associated with the reaction-diffusion equation in commercial software COMSOL. Compared with the results of solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) and traditional level set method, this scheme obtained a smooth geometry boundary. In the present computational scheme, the computational cost could be enormously saved without solving… More >
