Ionic Polymer Metal Composite Flapping Actuator Mimicking Dragonflies

    Sujoy Mukherjee1, Ranjan Ganguli1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 105-134, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.105

Abstract In this study, variational principle is used for dynamic modeling of an Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) flapping wing. The IPMC is an Electro-active Polymer (EAP) which is emerging as a useful smart material for `artificial muscle' applications. Dynamic characteristics of IPMC flapping wings having the same size as the actual wings of three different dragonfly species Aeshna Multicolor, Anax Parthenope Julius and Sympetrum Frequens are analyzed using numerical simulations. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. A comparative study of the performances of three IPMC flapping wings is conducted. Among the three species, it is… More >

Experimental and Numerical Study of Micro Deep Drawing of Copper Single Crystal

    XL Geng1, KS Zhang2, YQ Guo1, L Qin1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 1-16, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.013.001

Abstract One of the problems in a micro-forming process is the grain size effect, which means the formed part consists of a single grain or several grains sometimes, so the material shows anisotropic or heterogeneous. Under these conditions, a conventional method, which based on the isotropic and homogeneous material hypothesis, is not suitable. In this paper, Experimental investigations into micro deep drawing of the copper single crystal were carried out and the pattern of the micro-cup and the drawing force were observed. Using crystal plasticity theory, a user material subroutine (VUMAT) was built and linked to ABAQUS, and the micro deep… More >

The Boundary Contour Method for Piezoelectric Media with Quadratic Boundary Elements

    Aimin Jiang1,2, Yili Wu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.12, No.2, pp. 101-120, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.012.101

Abstract This paper presents a development of the boundary contour method (BCM) for piezoelectric media. Firstly, the divergence-free of the integrand of the piezoelectric boundary element method is proved. Secondly, the boundary contour method formulations are obtained by introducing quadratic shape functions and Green's functions (Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering1998;158: 65-80) for piezoelectric media and using the rigid body motion solution to regularize the BCM and avoid computation of the corner tensor. The BCM is applied to the problem of piezoelectric media. Finally, numerical solutions for illustrative examples are compared with exact ones. The numerical results of the BCM… More >
