Abstract Implementation of biofloc technology (BFT) system in aquaculture industry shows high productivity, low feed conversion ratio, and an optimum culture environment. This study was divided into two phases. The first phase involved maintaining the water quality using the optimum carbon-to-nitrogen ratio by manipulating pH in culture water. The second phase examined the performance of harvesting biofloc (remaining phytoplankton and suspended solids in the system) using chicken eggshell powder (CESP). This study showed that pH 7 to 8 were the best biofloc performance with high removal percentage of ammonia (>99%) with a remaining ammonia concentration of 0.016 mg L−1 and 0.018… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3559-3572, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.021945

    Abstract

Agave salmiana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HAP). The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chemistry Hydrothermal Biosynthesis at 180°C with a pH of 5, by reacting CaO from Agave Salmiana ash and Eggshell powder, with dibasic calcium phosphate (CaHPO4•2H2O) in an aqueous solution, with Aloe barbadensis extract. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dramatically in the presence of Aloe barbadensis. Large crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed… More > Graphic Abstract

Pathways for Sustainable Utilization of Waste Chicken Eggshell

Omojola Awogbemi1,*, Daramy Vandi Von Kallon1, Victor Sunday Aigbodion2,3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.8, pp. 2217-2246, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.019152

Abstract Chicken eggshell is one of the most common wastes generated from households, restaurants and other food processing outlets. Waste Chicken Eggshells (WCES) also constitutes an environmental nuisance and ends up discarded at dumping site with no consideration of further usage. The main constituent of WCES is calcium carbonate from which calcium or calcium oxide can be extracted for various applications. This current effort reviews recently published literature on the diverse applications of WCES. The considered utilization avenues include catalysts for biofuel production, construction industry, wastewater purification, industrial sector, food industry, medical, and agricultural applications. The specific areas of application apart… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.4, pp. 1137-1151, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.018560

Abstract The valorization of eggshell waste as bio-calcium oxide is crucial for pollution prevention and supporting sustainable development. There are several reports on the thermal conversion of eggshell waste to calcium oxide for the partial or complete substitution of natural lime applications. However, this paper reports the thermal decomposition of large amounts of hatchery eggshell waste on an industrial-scale car bottom furnace for the first time. The hatchery eggshell waste was sundried and placed into five stacked trays in the car bottom furnace. The calcination of the eggshell waste was conducted at 900°C for 3 and 4 h under an atmosphere… More > Graphic Abstract
