Abstract After steam discharge in heavy oil reservoirs, the distribution of temperature, pressure, and permeability in different wells becomes irregular. Flow channels can easily be produced, which affect the sweep efficiency of the oil displacement. Previous studies have shown that the salting-out plugging method can effectively block these channels in high-temperature reservoirs, improve the suction profile, and increase oil production. In the present study, the optimal dosage of the plugging agent is determined taking into account connection transmissibility and inter-well volumes. Together with the connectivity model, a water flooding simulation model is introduced. Moreover, a non-gradient stochastic disturbance algorithm is used… More >

Experimental Study on Heavy Oil Drag Reduction in Horizontal Pipelines by Water Annular Conveying

Abstract Transportation of heavy oil by the so-called water-ring technique is a very promising method by which pressure drop and pollution can be significantly reduced. Dedicated experiments have been carried out by changing the phase’s density, viscosity, velocity and interfacial tension to systematically analyze the characteristics of the water ring. On the basis of such experimental data, a mathematical model for pressure drop prediction has been introduced. This research shows that as long as the density of oil and water remains the same, a concentric water ring can effectively be formed. In such conditions, the oil-water viscosity difference has little effect… More >

Experimental study of interfacial phenomena between the heavy oil and maximum solvent concentration as function of injection pressures

    Hameed Muhamad1, Simant Upreti 2, Ali Lohi3, Huu Doan4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.12, No.3, pp. 111-123, 2016, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2016.012.111

Abstract Heavy Oil is an up and coming energy resource that is aggressively being sought after as the world’s energy demand increases. As technology continues to improve, this once costly energy source is quickly becoming a more viable alternative. Vapor extraction (Vapex) process is an emerging technology for viscous oil recovery that has gained much attention in the oil industry. The vapor extraction of heavy oil system is presented to describe experimental setups and procedures used to perform different experiments of vape extraction process. The generated experimental data were used to calculate the live oil maximum interfacial solvent concentration as function… More >
