A Damage-Mode Based Three Dimensional Constitutive Model for Fibre-Reinforced Composites

    M. Chatiri1, A. Matzenmiller2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.35, No.3, pp. 255-283, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.035.255

Abstract This article presents a three dimensional constitutive model for anisotropic damage to describe the elastic-brittle behavior of unidirectional fibrereinforced laminated composites. The primary objective of the article focuses on the three dimensional relationship between damage of the material and the effective elastic properties for the purpose of stress analysis of composite structures, in extension to the two dimensional model in Matzenmiller, Lubliner and Taylor (1995). A homogenized continuum is adopted for the constitutive theory of anisotropic damage and elasticity. Damage initiation criteria are based on Puck failure criterion for first ply failure and progressive micro crack propagation is based on… More >

Lattice Dynamics and Second and Third Order Elastic Constants of Iron at Elevated Pressures

    Hieu H. Pham1, Tahir Ça ˇgın1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 175-194, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.175

Abstract We analyze the lattice dynamics of Fe in different crystal phases (bcc, fcc and hcp) by using density-functional theory. The study on equations of states indicates that bcc Fe is more stable than fcc and hcp Fe at low pressures. However, dynamical instabilities in lattice vibrations of bcc Fe predict a phase transformation from bcc to hcp at higher pressures. We reported a complete set of second-order and third-order elastic constants of Fe in these three phases. We observed a linear variation in the values of second order elastic constant as a function of increased pressures. The phonon spectra were… More >

Spectral Approaches for the Fast Computation of Yield Surfaces and First-Order Plastic Property Closures for Polycrystalline Materials with Cubic-Triclinic Textures

    Hamad F. Al-Harbi1, Marko Knezevic1,2, Surya R. Kalidindi1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 153-172, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.015.153

Abstract In recent work, we have demonstrated the viability and computational advantages of DFT-based spectral databases for facilitating crystal plasticity solutions in face-centered cubic (fcc) metals subjected to arbitrary deformation paths. In this paper, we extend and validate the application of these novel ideas to body-centered cubic (bcc) metals that exhibit a much larger number of potential slip systems. It was observed that the databases for the bcc metals with a larger number of slip systems were more compact compared to those obtained previously for fcc metals with a smaller number of slip systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate in this paper that… More >

A First-Principles Computational Framework for Liquid Mineral Systems

    B.B. Karki1, D. Bhattarai1, L. Stixrude2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.3, No.3, pp. 107-118, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2006.003.107

Abstract Computer modeling of liquid phase poses tremendous challenge: It requires a relatively large simulation size, long simulation time and accurate interatomic interaction and as such, it produces massive amounts of data. Recent advances in hardware and software have made it possible to accurately simulate the liquid phase. This paper reports the details of methodology used in the context of liquid simulations and subsequent analysis of the output data. For illustration purpose, we consider the results for the liquid phases of two geophysically relevant materials, namely MgO and MgSiO3. The simulations are performed using the parallel first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) technique… More >
