    Meera Radhakrishnan1,*, Anandan Panneerselvam2, Nandhagopal Nachimuthu3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.6, pp. 1185-1199, 2020, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2020.012069 - 24 December 2020

Abstract Image segmentation is a crucial stage in the investigation of medical images and is predominantly implemented in various medical applications. In the case of investigating MRI brain images, the image segmentation is mainly employed to measure and visualize the anatomic structure of the brain that underwent modifications to delineate the regions. At present, distinct segmentation approaches with various degrees of accurateness and complexities are available. But, it needs tuning of various parameters to obtain optimal results. The tuning of parameters can be considered as an optimization issue using a similarity function in solution space. This… More >

PGCA-Net: Progressively Aggregating Hierarchical Features with the Pyramid Guided Channel Attention for Saliency Detection

    Jiajie Mai1, Xuemiao Xu2,*, Guorong Xiao3, Zijun Deng2, Jiaxing Chen2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.4, pp. 847-855, 2020, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2020.010119

Abstract The Salient object detection aims to segment out the most visually distinctive objects in an image, which is a challenging task in computer vision. In this paper, we present the PGCA-Net equipped with the pyramid guided channel attention fusion block (PGCAFB) for the saliency detection task. Given an input image, the hierarchical features are extracted using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), then starting from the highest-level semantic features, we stage-by-stage restore the spatial saliency details by aggregating the lowerlevel detailed features. Since for the weak discriminative ability of the shallow detailed features, directly introducing More >

A Multi-objective Invasive Weed Optimization Method for Segmentation of Distress Images

    Eslam Mohammed Abdelkader1,2,*, Osama Moselhi3, Mohamed Marzouk4, Tarek Zayed5

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.4, pp. 643-661, 2020, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2020.010100

Abstract Image segmentation is one of the fundamental stages in computer vision applications. Several meta-heuristics have been applied to solve the segmentation problems by extending the Otsu and entropy functions. However, no single-objective function can optimally handle the diversity of information in images besides the multimodality issues of gray-level images. This paper presents a self-adaptive multi-objective optimization-based method for the detection of crack images in reinforced concrete bridges. The proposed method combines the flexibility of information theory functions in addition to the invasive weed optimization algorithm for bi-level thresholding. The capabilities of the proposed method are More >

Color Image Segmentation Using Soft Rough Fuzzy-C-Means and Local Binary Pattern

    R.V.V. Krishna1,*, S. Srinivas Kumar2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 281-290, 2020, DOI:10.31209/2019.100000121

Abstract In this paper, a color image segmentation algorithm is proposed by extracting both texture and color features and applying them to the one -against-all multi class support vector machine (MSVM) classifier for segmentation. Local Binary Pattern is used for extracting the textural features and L*a*b color model is used for obtaining the color features. The MSVM is trained using the samples obtained from a novel soft rough fuzzy c-means (SRFCM) clustering. The fuzzy set based membership functions capably handle the problem of overlapping clusters. The lower and upper approximation concepts of rough sets deal well More >

Abstract Ore image segmentation is a key step in an ore grain size analysis based on image processing. The traditional segmentation methods do not deal with ore textures and shadows in ore images well Those methods often suffer from under-segmentation and over-segmentation. In this article, in order to solve the problem, an ore image segmentation method based on U-Net is proposed. We adjust the structure of U-Net to speed up the processing, and we modify the loss function to enhance the generalization of the model. After the collection of the ore image, we design the annotation More >

Abstract To troubleshoot two problems arising from the segmentation of manganese nodule images-uneven illumination and morphological defects caused by white sand coverage, we propose, with reference to features of manganese nodules, a method called “background gray value calculation”. As the result of the image procession with the aid this method, the two problems above are solved eventually, together with acquisition of a segmentable image of manganese nodules. As a result, its comparison with other segmentation methods justifies its feasibility and stability. Judging from simulation results, it is indicated that this method is applicable to repair the More >

Abstract In large-scale deer farming image analysis, K-means or maximum betweenclass variance (Otsu) algorithms can be used to distinguish the deer from the background. However, in an actual breeding environment, the barbed wire or chain-link fencing has a certain isolating effect on the deer which greatly interferes with the identification of the individual deer. Also, when the target and background grey values are similar, the multiple background targets cannot be completely separated. To better identify the posture and behaviour of deer in a deer shed, we used digital image processing to separate the deer from the… More >

Coverless Image Steganography Based on Image Segmentation

    Yuanjing Luo1, Jiaohua Qin1, *, Xuyu Xiang1, Yun Tan1, Zhibin He1, Neal N. Xiong2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.64, No.2, pp. 1281-1295, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.010867 - 10 June 2020

Abstract To resist the risk of the stego-image being maliciously altered during transmission, we propose a coverless image steganography method based on image segmentation. Most existing coverless steganography methods are based on whole feature mapping, which has poor robustness when facing geometric attacks, because the contents in the image are easy to lost. To solve this problem, we use ResNet to extract semantic features, and segment the object areas from the image through Mask RCNN for information hiding. These selected object areas have ethical structural integrity and are not located in the visual center of the… More >

    A. Renugambal1, *, K. Selva Bhuvaneswari2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.64, No.2, pp. 681-700, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.09519 - 10 June 2020

Abstract In this study, a novel hybrid Water Cycle Moth-Flame Optimization (WCMFO) algorithm is proposed for multilevel thresholding brain image segmentation in Magnetic Resonance (MR) image slices. WCMFO constitutes a hybrid between the two techniques, comprising the water cycle and moth-flame optimization algorithms. The optimal thresholds are obtained by maximizing the between class variance (Otsu’s function) of the image. To test the performance of threshold searching process, the proposed algorithm has been evaluated on standard benchmark of ten axial T2-weighted brain MR images for image segmentation. The experimental outcomes infer that it produces better optimal threshold values… More >

Abstract Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new intravascular imaging technique with high resolution and could provide accurate morphological infor￾mation for plaques in coronary arteries. However, its segmentation is still com￾monly performed manually by experts which is time-consuming. The aim of this study was to develop automatic techniques to characterize plaque components and quantify plaque cap thickness using 3 machine learning methods including convolutional neural network (CNN) with U-Net architecture, CNN with Fully convolutional DenseNet (FC-DenseNet) architecture and support vector machine (SVM). In vivo OCT and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images were acquired from two patients at Emory… More >
