Redo testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) in men with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) and obstructive azoospermia (OA)

    Abdullah Alahmari1,2, Rabea Akram1,2, Michael Maalouf3, Abdulelah Elsayed4, Armand Zini1,5,*

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.32, No.4, pp. 317-323, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cju.2025.064517 - 29 August 2025

Abstract Background: Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a minimally invasive testicular sperm retrieval technique that has been utilized in the treatment of male factor infertility. We sought to evaluate sperm retrieval outcomes of primary and redo TESA in men with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) and obstructive azoospermia (OA). Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of consecutive TESAs (primary and redo) for men with severe OAT and OA performed between January 2011 and August 2022 at a high-volume infertility center. We compared TESA outcomes in men with severe OAT to those with OA and compared outcomes of men… More >

The effects of hormone-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling on spermatogenesis in Sertoli cells

    YANSHUANG ZHAO, WANXI YANG*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.8, pp. 1709-1725, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.030379 - 28 August 2023

Abstract The phosphoinositide-3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway is crucial for Sertoli cell development and completing spermatogenesis. Its main role is to promote proliferation and inhibit apoptosis. Many factors activate the PI3K/AKT pathway, like hormones, such as follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), androgen, estrogen, insulin to name a few. Many of these factors have receptors inside or on the surface of Sertoli cells (SCs). This review summarizes how these hormones directly regulate the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in SCs, which in turn affects SC proliferation and differentiation. Further, hormone-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling also stimulates SC secretion, which is essential for germ More >

Defining hypogonadism in male partners of couples with unexplained infertility

    J.C. Trussell1, Ava Delu1, Robert J. Kiltz2, Vladimir A. Kuznetsov1

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.27, No.4, pp. 10306-10311, 2020

Abstract Introduction: Men with unexplained infertility (UI) should undergo an initial hormonal evaluation including serum FSH and total testosterone (TT). Unfortunately, there is no consensus regarding which TT cut point should be used to define hypogonadism in such men. To determine the best definition for hypogonadism, three different, literature-based TT cut points were used to assess associations between TT and semen parameters. The hypothesis was that the lowest TT cut point would associate with poorest sperm parameters.
Materials and methods: We performed an IRB-approved retrospective chart review of 247 consecutive males presenting for evaluation of male factor infertility.… More >

Cultural anorgasmia: considerations in the evaluation of male infertility in the Hasidic community

    Elliot Dubowitch, Jacob Khurgin

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.26, No.4, pp. 9864-9866, 2019

Abstract There are many factors that may contribute to infertility, including psychosocial issues. The understanding of the cultural and spiritual background of patients can help elicit a sexual history that may lead to a diagnosis and subsequent successful treatment plan. Within this context, we present a case report of a Hasidic couple with primary infertility. Evaluation revealed what we are referring to as “cultural anorgasmia,” with the male partner having never been educated about nor experienced an orgasm due to his religious upbringing. Counseling about basic anatomy and the physiology of sexual arousal and orgasm was More >

Postwash total motile sperm count: should it be included as a standard male infertility work up

    Khaled Madbouly1, Ahmed Isa2, Mohamad Habous3, Raed Almannie4, Basim Abu-Rafea2, Saleh Binsaleh4

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 8847-8852, 2017

Abstract Introduction: Pregnancy rates after intrauterine insemination (IUI) varies greatly. We aimed to identify pre and post processing semen analysis parameters that may be predictive of successful pregnancy in couples undergoing IUI.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study of the records of all couples underwent IUI for a 2 year period at our infertility center. Different characteristics of female subjects, pre and post processing semen parameters and treatment parameters were compared statistically.
Results: Thirty-two clinical pregnancies followed 526 IUI cycles in 294 couples, for a clinical pregnancy rate of 6.1% per cycle and a 10.9% per couple. The mean… More >

The “infertility” of Catherine de Medici and its infl uence on 16th century France

Jennifer Gordetsky, Ronald Rabinowitz, Jeanne O’Brien

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 4584-4588, 2009

Abstract Objective: Catherine de Medici, queen consort of King Henry II of France, was a powerful woman at a time when power for her sex was determined by fecundity. A decade-long history of infertility might have placed her at risk for condemnation, but her husband's known urologic abnormalities played in her favor. This presentation will address the penile deformity of her husband, Henry II, and how this likely played a crucial role in her eventual rise to power, the interventions undertaken with regard to her purported infertility, and the historical ramifications when Catherine de Medici went on… More >
