Abstract Climate change-driven environmental stresses, particularly ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, pose severe threats to grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) productivity and physiological stability. This study investigated the protective role of melatonin in in vitro plantlets of two grapevine cultivars, ‘Merlot’ and ‘Erciş’, subjected to low (≈8.25 μW cm−2, 16 h) and high (≈33 μW cm−2, 4 h) UV-B exposure. Significant cultivar-specific responses were observed (p < 0.001). The ‘Erciş’ cultivar exhibited higher oxidative stress, with malondialdehyde (MDA) levels reaching 24.30 mmol g−1 FW in control plants compared with 14.91 ± 0.25 mmol g−1 FW in ‘Merlot’. Melatonin provided dose-dependent mitigation, reducing MDA to… More >

Abstract The development of cancer cell resistance to conventional treatments continues to be a major obstacle in the successful treatment of tumors of many types. The discovery of a highly efficient direct and indirect free radical scavenger, melatonin, in the mitochondrial matrix may be a factor in determining both the occurrence of cancer cell drug insensitivity as well as radioresistance. This relates to two of the known hallmarks of cancer, i.e., exaggerated free radical generation in the mitochondria and the development of Warburg type metabolism (glycolysis). The hypothesis elaborated in this report assumes that the high… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.10, pp. 2985-3002, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.070697 - 29 October 2025

Abstract Melatonin is a multifunctional molecule found in all organisms that has been shown to play a crucial role in plant growth, development, and stress response. Plant melatonin is typically synthesized in organelles termed chloroplasts, and the mechanisms of its synthesis and metabolic pathways have been extensively studied. Melatonin serves a significant regulatory function in plant growth and development, influencing the morphological and physiological characteristics of plants by modulating biological processes. While studies on plant melatonin receptors are in their early stages compared to studies in animal receptors, the binding mechanism with melatonin is now recognized… More >

Starch Orodispersible Film Loaded with Melatonin for Human Supplementation

Fabio Tamanini1, Tatiane Zucchini de Souza1, Creusa Sayuri Tahara Amaral1, Antônio José Felix Carvalho2, Eliane Trovatti1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.7, pp. 1343-1354, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.052288 - 21 August 2024

Abstract An innovative pharmaceutical form for administering melatonin, based on starch orodispersible film (ODF), was designed and prepared. The composition of the ODF included starch as the polymer matrix, the active drug melatonin, and a plasticizer. Melatonin, a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, can be absorbed by passive diffusion across the mucous membrane, resulting in improved bioavailability when compared to conventional oral administration. This study shows a simple and efficient method for preparing melatonin-loaded orodispersible films with a physically stable and commercially viable matrix, suitable for use in the pharmaceutical industry.… More >

Abstract Melatonin and abscisic acid, as major plant hormones, play important roles in the physiological and biochemical activities of crops, but the interaction between the two under salt stress is not yet clear. This study investigated the endogenous levels of melatonin and abscisic acid in rice by using exogenous melatonin, abscisic acid, and their synthetic inhibitors, and examined their interactions under salt stress. The research results indicate that melatonin and abscisic acid can improve rice salt tolerance. Melatonin alleviated the salt sensitivity caused by abscisic acid deficiency, increased antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant content in rice More >

The regulatory role of melatonin in pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone synthesis through casein kinase 1α

Abstract Introduction: The regulation of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) synthesis involves neurotransmitters, with melatonin being a subject of ongoing debate. TSH transcription, synthesis, and secretion from the pituitary pars distalis (PD) is primarily regulated in a photoperiodic manner by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). In contrast, in the pituitary pars tuberalis (PT), mRNA transcription and alpha/beta chain synthesis, but not secretion, of a TSH-like product is regulated by melatonin. Conversely, non-photoperiodic melatonin might also affect the secretion of a TSH-like product from the PT. Nevertheless, the impact of exogenous melatonin on the underlying PD-TSH synthesis remains unclear. Casein kinase… More >

Abstract Melatonin is a versatile indolamine synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland in response to the photoperiodic information received by the retinohypothalamic signaling pathway. Melatonin has many benefits, such as organizing circadian rhythms and acting as a powerful hormone. We aimed to show the antitumor effects of melatonin in both in vivo and in vitro models through the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway and the Argyrophilic Nucleolar Regulatory Region (AgNOR), using the Microcomputed Tomography (Micro CT). Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells were administered into the mice by subcutaneous injection. Animals with solid tumors were injected… More > Graphic Abstract

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.5, pp. 1571-1587, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.025481 - 09 March 2023

Abstract Drought stress is a serious threat to the germination of plant seeds and the growth of seedlings. Melatonin has been proven to play an important role in alleviating plant stress. However, its effect on seed germination under drought conditions is still poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effects of melatonin on rice seed germination and physiological characteristics under drought stress. Rice seeds were treated with different concentrations of melatonin (i.e., 0, 20, 100, and 500 μM) and drought stress was simulated with 5% polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000). The results showed that 100 μM melatonin can… More >

    Abstract

Drought stress is one of the major environmental obstacles that limit the production and development of apples (Malus domestica Borkh.). The role of melatonin is well known in the protection of plants under environmental stresses. In this study, we investigated the effect of melatonin on apple rootstock M. hupehensis Rehd under drought stress. The results showed that drought inhibited the growth of M. hupehensis and dramatically reduced root surface area, root volume, the number of tips and forks, and root diameter. Drought-induced growth inhibition was significantly decreased by adding melatonin. Net photosynthetic rate (Pn), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), stomatal
