Ahmed J. Hamad*, Fawziea M. Hussien, Johain J. Faraj

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.5, pp. 1483-1497, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.016867 - 16 July 2021

Abstract The fluctuation in drying temperature influences the food products’ quality and drying time significantly during the drying process using an indirect solar dryer. One of the effective methods to reduce these variations in the temperature is based on thermal storage materials to control the drying temperature. An experimental investigation is presented in this study to evaluate the performance of an indirect solar dryer with air double pass using multiple phase change materials (PCM) as thermal storage materials. Two PCMs with different melting points are used to store the available heat energy during peak sunshine periods… More >

    I. Samylingam1, Navid Aslfattahi2, K. Kadirgama1,*, Mahendran Samykano3, L. Samylingam4, R. Saidur4,5

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.5, pp. 1253-1265, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.016087 - 16 July 2021

Abstract In this study, nanocomposite of ternary nitrate molten salt induced with MXene is developed. LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3 with wt% of 35:12:53 and 35:10:55 are produced and doped with MXene in the wt% of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. FTIR result indicates the composites had no chemical reaction occurred during the preparation. UV-VIS analysis shows the absorption enhancement with respect to the concentration of MXene. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to measure the thermal stability of the LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3 induced with MXene. The ternary molten salts were stable at temperature range of 600–700°C. Thermal stability increases with the addition of More >

A Study for the Influence of the Location of PCMs Assembly System on Improving Thermal Environment inside Disaster-Relief Temporary Houses

    Caixia Wang2, Xiao Huang1,*, Hongqing Chen2, Weijie Liang2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.7, pp. 1239-1252, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.014746 - 18 March 2021

Abstract Currently, people pay more and more attention to the transitional resettlement of victims after various natural disasters. There is an urgent need for a large number of temporary houses to resettle the victims after natural disasters. Disaster-relief temporary houses (DTHs) played an important role in the post-disaster resettlement in the past, which can not only be produced on a large scale, but also can be quickly and conveniently erected, which were the main means to solve the problem of transitional resettlement. However, due to their temporary nature, there was no extra energy consuming system installed… More >

Enhanced Thermal Performance of Roofing Materials by Integrating Phase Change Materials to Reduce Energy Consumption in Buildings

    Chanita Mano, Atthakorn Thongtha*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.3, pp. 495-506, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.013201 - 14 January 2021

Abstract This work focused on characterizing and improving the thermal behavior of metal sheet roofing. To decrease the heat transfer from the roof into a building, we investigated the efficiency of four types of phase change materials, with different melting points: PCM І, PCM II, PCM III and PCM IV, when used in conjunction with a sheet metal roof. The exterior metal roofing surface temperature was held constant at 50°C, 60°C, 70°C and 80°C, using a thermal source (halogen lights) for 360 min to investigate and compare the thermal performance of the metal sheet roofing with… More >

NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF A CASCADED LATENT HEAT THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE

Pengda Li, Chao Xu, Zhirong Liao* , Xing Ju, Feng Ye

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.15, pp. 1-10, 2020, DOI:10.5098/hmt.15.10

Abstract This study numerically investigates the charging and discharging processes of a three-stages cascaded latent heat thermal energy storage unit using three molten salts as the phase change materials (PCMs). Each stage of the unit is a vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger, whose shell side is filled with the PCM and air. The liquid fractions, temperatures, and accumulated thermal energy of the PCMs during the fully charging and discharging processes, as well as the effects of the HTF inlet temperature, are analyzed. The results show that lower melting temperature of the PCM causes faster charging rate and More >

TRANSIENT MODELLING OF AN EV INVERTER HEAT SINK WITH PCM

    B. Orra,* , R. Singha, T. L. Phana , M. Mochizukib

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.13, pp. 1-6, 2019, DOI:10.5098/hmt.13.1

Abstract One of the problems with cooling an IGBT inverter chip is that its heat generation is not constant. These chips tend to produce heat in pulses which results in high peak chip temperatures. Transient modelling is required to determine the suitability of a heat sink and to ensure the max peak temperature is not exceeded. This paper demonstrates a method of transient thermal analysis using a thermal resistance / capacitor network. A sample heat sink was modelled and then experimentally tested to validate the model. A novel method of modelling phase change materials (PCM) using More >

Implementation of Micro Encapsulated Phase Change Material (MEPCM) Into Fluid Based Heat Exchangers

    Robert Plant*, M. Ziad Saghir

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 18-18, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.04980

Abstract Fluids have been used to maintain operational temperatures for machinery for as long as machines have been developed. Over time different mediums have been explored, such as oils and waxes. These different mediums have had varying impacts on the overall system such as improving the heat capacity but at the cost and strain on the system of requiring more pumping power. Some mediums, while they provide an improvement can also damage to the system itself over time with unwanted interactions such corrosion. In this paper we will examine the implementation and suspension into the working… More >

Abstract A two-dimensional numerical model that accounts for heat transfer by conduction and natural convection in the molten region of nano enhanced Phase Change Material (PCM) is performed. Numerical investigations were conducted using an enthalpy- porosity method in order to examine the impact of the dispersion of copper (CuO) nanoparticles on the heat source temperature and the effect on the heat sink secured working time and the melting rate. Results show that heat spreads more easily along the conducting plate and to the PCM and, consequently, the PCM melts rapidly and the heat source is efficiency More >
