Abstract The platinum-based chemotherapy is one of the most frequently used treatment protocols for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), and chemoresistance, however, usually results in treatment failure and limits its application in the clinic. It has been shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) play a significant role in tumor chemoresistance. In this study, miR-125b was identified as a specific cisplatin (DDP)-resistant gene in LUAD, as indicated by the bioinformatics analysis and the real-time quantitative PCR assay. The decreased serum level of miR-125b in LUAD patients was correlated with the poor treatment response rate and short survival time. MiR-125b decreased the A549/DDP proliferation, and the multiple… More >

Abstract Background: Sepsis, a type of systemic disease, can impact nearly all organs, tissues and cells. Among them, endothelial cells are amongst the first to be affected and respond to the insult. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of microRNA-30a-5p (miR-30a-5p) on human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) treated with lipolysaccharide (LPS). Methods: An in vitro model of sepsis was established in HPMECs with the use of LPS. Transfecting with different tools (mimetic and inhibitor) to modify miR-30a-5p expression. Cell viability, proliferation and apoptosis were detected by the CCK-8 assay, the EdU kit and fluorescence staining, respectively. The autophagy-related… More >

Abstract The global incidence of lung cancer is marked by a considerably elevated mortality rate. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) exert pivotal influence in the intricate orchestration of gene regulation, and their dysregulation can precipitate dire consequences, notably cancer. Within this context, miRNAs encapsulated in exosomes manifest a diversified impact on the landscape of lung cancer, wherein their actions may either foster angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and metastasis, or counteract these processes. This comprehensive review article discerns potential targets for the prospective development of therapeutic agents tailored for lung cancer. Tumor-suppressive miRNAs, such as miR-204, miR-192, miR-30a, miR-34a, miR-34b, miR-203, and miR-212, exhibit heightened expression… More >

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 463-476, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.044085

Abstract An important factor in the emergence and progression of osteosarcoma (OS) is the dysregulated expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). Transcription factor 7-like 1 (TCF7L1), a member of the T cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) transcription factor family, interacts with the Wnt signaling pathway regulator β-catenin and acts as a DNA-specific binding protein. This study sought to elucidate the impact of the interaction between miR-329-3p and TCF7L1 on the growth and apoptosis of OS and analyze the regulatory expression relationship between miRNA and mRNA in osteosarcoma cells using a variety of approaches. MiR329-3p was significantly downregulated, while TCF7L1 was considerably up-regulated in… More > Graphic Abstract

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 517-528, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.030293

Abstract Background: The aberrant intracellular expression of a mitochondrial aspartyl-tRNA synthetase 2 (DARS2) has been reported in human cancers. Nevertheless, its critical role and detailed mechanism in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remain unexplored. Methods: Initially, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-based Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database () was used to analyze the prognostic relevance of DARS2 expression in LUAD. Further, cell counting kit (CCK)-8, immunostaining, and transwell invasion assays in LUAD cell lines in vitro, as well as DARS2 silence on LUAD by tumorigenicity experiments in vivo in nude mice, were performed. Besides, we analyzed the expression levels of p-PI3K (phosphorylated-Phosphotylinosital3… More >

Stability and Error Analysis of Reduced-Order Methods Based on POD with Finite Element Solutions for Nonlocal Diffusion Problems

    Haolun Zhang1, Mengna Yang1, Jie Wei2, Yufeng Nie2,*

Digital Engineering and Digital Twin, Vol.2, pp. 49-77, 2024, DOI:10.32604/dedt.2023.044180

Abstract This paper mainly considers the formulation and theoretical analysis of the reduced-order numerical method constructed by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for nonlocal diffusion problems with a finite range of nonlocal interactions. We first set up the classical finite element discretization for nonlocal diffusion equations and briefly explain the difference between nonlocal and partial differential equations (PDEs). Nonlocal models have to handle double integrals when using finite element methods (FEMs), which causes the generation of algebraic systems to be more challenging and time-consuming, and discrete systems have less sparsity than those for PDEs. So we establish a reduced-order model (ROM) for… More >

Abstract The purpose of this research work is to investigate the numerical solutions of the fractional dengue transmission model (FDTM) in the presence of Wolbachia using the stochastic-based Levenberg-Marquardt neural network (LM-NN) technique. The fractional dengue transmission model (FDTM) consists of 12 compartments. The human population is divided into four compartments; susceptible humans (Sh), exposed humans (Eh), infectious humans (Ih), and recovered humans (Rh). Wolbachia-infected and Wolbachia-uninfected mosquito population is also divided into four compartments: aquatic (eggs, larvae, pupae), susceptible, exposed, and infectious. We investigated three different cases of vertical transmission probability (η), namely when Wolbachia-free mosquitoes persist only (η =… More >

Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Model for Intelligent Fire Intensity Detection Algorithm with Decision Making in Low-Power Devices

    Emmanuel Lule1,2,*, Chomora Mikeka3, Alexander Ngenzi4, Didacienne Mukanyiligira5

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 57-81, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.037988

Abstract Local markets in East Africa have been destroyed by raging fires, leading to the loss of life and property in the nearby communities. Electrical circuits, arson, and neglected charcoal stoves are the major causes of these fires. Previous methods, i.e., satellites, are expensive to maintain and cause unnecessary delays. Also, unit-smoke detectors are highly prone to false alerts. In this paper, an Interval Type-2 TSK fuzzy model for an intelligent lightweight fire intensity detection algorithm with decision-making in low-power devices is proposed using a sparse inference rules approach. A free open–source MATLAB/Simulink fuzzy toolbox integrated into MATLAB 2018a is used… More >

How Travelling Wavelength Affects Hydrodynamic Performance of Two Linear-Accelerating Mirror-Symmetric Fish-Like Swimmers

    Zhonglu Lin1,2, Dongfang Liang2, Yu Zhang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-9, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010442

Abstract Fish schools are capable of simultaneous linear acceleration. To reveal the underlying hydrodynamic mechanism, we numerically investigate how Reynolds number Re = 1000−2000, Strouhal number St = 0.2−0.7 and wavelength λ = 0.5−2 affects the mean net thrust of two side-by-side NACA0012 hydrofoils undulating in anti-phase. In total, 550 cases are simulated using immersed boundary method. The thrust is strengthened by wavelength and Strouhal number, yet only slightly by the Reynolds number. We apply the symbolic regression algorithm to formulate this relationship as a high-level summary. More >
