Anatomy of flower and fruit of Vassobia breviflora (Solanaceae) in the south of the southern Yungas (Argentina)

    Bernacki FG1, PL Albornoz1,2, M Valoy1, M Ordano1,3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.2, pp. 478-487, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.478

Abstract Solanaceae is a family with nearly 2400 species of cosmopolitan distribution. Vassobia breviflora is the only species of the genus present in Argentina. The goal of this work was to review and characterize the anatomy of the flower and fruit of V. breviflora from samples collected in populations of Yungas in the argentine Northwest. Conventional anatomical techniques were applied. The results showed that most flower, fruit and seed structures did not differ from those previously reported regarding the structural organization described for other species of the Solanaceae family. However, for the first time, we described the androecium, fruit, seed, floral… More >

Evaluation of the viability and germination of tempisque [Sideroxylon capiri (A.DC.) Pittier Sapotaceae]

    Lazos-Monterrosa FA, C Orantes-García, O Farrera-Sarmiento, AG Verdugo-Valdez, MS Sánchez-Cortés, LE Ruíz-Meza

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 138-143, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.138

Abstract The tempisque (Sideroxylon capiri) is a tree native to Mexico used by the rural population for housing construction, poles and hedges, as fuel (wood) and also for fodder and ornamental purposes, among others. It is considered an endangered species. In order to contribute to its preservation and sustainable management, it was considered important to determine the proportion of viable seeds, the loss of viability due to storage period and the germination process by applying pregerminative treatments. We found that freshly collected seeds showed 100% viability, which decreased to 0% after 5 months of storage. According to the cumulative germination significant… More >

In vitro evaluation of native entomopathogenic fungi and neem (Azadiractha indica) extracts on Spodoptera frugiperda

    Hernandez-Trejo A1, B Estrada-Drouaillet1, JA López-Santillán1, C Rios-Velasco2, SE Varela-Fuentes1, R Rodríguez-Herrera3, E Osorio-Hernández1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.1, pp. 47-54, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.04611

Abstract The control of Spodoptera frugiperda is based on synthetic insecticides, so some alternatives are the use of entomopathogenic fungi (EF) and neem extract. The objective of the study was to evaluate in vitro effectiveness of native EF and neem extracts on S. frugiperda larvae. Six EF were identified by DNA sequencing of ITS regions from three EF (Fusarium solani, Metarrhizium robertsii, Nigrospora spherica and Penicillium citrinum). They were evaluated in concentrations of 1 × 10⁸ spores/ mL. In addition, a second bioassay was carried out evaluating only F. solani, M. robertsii and N. sphaerica and the addition of vegetable oil.… More >

Modeling and Simulation of Phantom Temperature Field in Magnetic Induction Hyperthermia

    J.H. Wu1, L.Y. Zhu2, J.T. Tang3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.3, pp. 225-240, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.225

Abstract Magnetic induction hyperthermia is one of hopeful methods for tumor therapy. In this method, several ferromagnetic seeds are needed to be implanted into the tumor. The seeds would produce energy, and cause the nearby tumor to die. Temperature prediction is significant before treatment. In addition, in clinical treatment, the tumor temperature has to be monitored in realtime. However, using as few thermometers as possible is the basic principle. Fortunately, the numerical simulation can contribute to realtime measurement. The seed temperature is modeled based on the Haider's method, which is treated as the thermal boundary in numerical simulation. We employ the… More >
