    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 55-71, 2024, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2023.044832

Abstract In the realm of subway shield tunnel operations, the impact of tunnel settlement on the operational performance of subway vehicles is a crucial concern. This study introduces an advanced analytical model to investigate rail geometric deformations caused by settlement within a vehicle-track-tunnel coupled system. The model integrates the geometric deformations of the track, attributed to settlement, as track irregularities. A novel “cyclic model” algorithm was employed to enhance computational efficiency without compromising on precision, a claim that was rigorously validated. The model’s capability extends to analyzing the time-history responses of vehicles traversing settlement-affected areas. The research primarily focuses on how… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.5, pp. 1287-1305, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017473

Abstract Completely weathered phyllite (CWP) has the characteristics of difficult compaction, low shear strength after compaction and large settlement after construction. The traditional improvement method using a single agent of red clay or cement for CWP satisfies the subgrade requirements for ordinary railway, but cannot meet the requirements of immediate strength and long-term post-construction settlement of high-speed railway at the same time. A series of experimental investigations were undertaken for the blended CWP soils, with three additives used. The first additive was red clay, the second was cement and the third was a combination of both red clay and cement at… More > Graphic Abstract

Design of Piled embankment and Settlement Control

    Renpeng Chen

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 101-102, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.020.101

Abstract In China, high-speed transportation infrastructure, including high-speed railways and highways, develops rapidly in recent years. The standard for post-construction settlement of the high-speed transportation infrastructure is restrict with the considerations of safety and comfort. Piled embankments are widely used over the deep soft deposits. The piles that support the embankment are exposed not only to the heavy loading from the embankment self-weight, but also to the cyclic loading induced by high-speed vehicles through their service time.

In present work, the model tests on soil arching were performed and a method for anticipating the loads carried by the piles was… More >

Structural Damage Detection in Framed Structures using Under Foundation Settlement/ Rotation of Bases

    Siddesha H1, Manjunath N Hegde2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 17-41, 2017, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2017.012.017

Abstract This paper describes the damage detection in framed structures due to the vertical support settlement and rotation of footing bases. The damage detection procedure proposed by Nobahari and Seyedpoor (2013) is used to detect the damage in the members of the frame. In the present study, instead of using the flexibility matrix (referred here as original flexibility matrix) method, the generalized flexibility matrix is used in the same algorithm and the results are compared. The algorithm uses flexibility matrix and strain energy concept to detect the damage in the members. The behaviour of the frame is discussed through changes observed… More >

Predicting Leakage-induced Settlement of Shield tunnels in Saturated Clay

    D.M. Zhang1,2, L.X. Ma1,2, H.W. Huang1,2, J. Zhang1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.89, No.3, pp. 163-188, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.089.163

Abstract This paper suggests a new set of analytical solutions for predicting leakage-induced seepage field and ground settlement in saturated clay. A unique feature of the solutions presented is considering the effect of the tunnel lining through the relative permeability between the tunnel and the soil. Through the superposition method, the proposed method can be easily extended to twin parallel tunnels. The accuracy of the analytical solutions are verified with numerical simulations. Parametric studies reveal that the decrease of pore pressure and the consequent settlements of ground and tunnel is proportional to the relative permeability. Over 20% of the initial hydrostatic… More >
