    Yanhui Zhang1, Lianhua Ma1, Hailiang Su1,2,3,*, Jirong Qin2, Zhining Chen2, Kaibiao Deng1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.2, pp. 1961-1980, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.045570

Abstract In this paper, to present a lightweight-developed front underrun protection device (FUPD) for heavy-duty trucks, plain weave carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used instead of the original high-strength steel. First, the mechanical and structural properties of plain carbon fiber composite anti-collision beams are comparatively analyzed from a multi-scale perspective. For studying the design capability of carbon fiber composite materials, we investigate the effects of TC-33 carbon fiber diameter (D), fiber yarn width (W) and height (H), and fiber yarn density (N) on the front underrun protective beam of carbon fiber composite materials. Based on the investigation, a material-structure matching… More >

Weiting Jiang*, Tingni He*, Chongyang Wang, Weiguo Pan, Jiang Liu

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.6, pp. 1447-1461, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.025269

Abstract Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used here to reduce pressure loss and improve heat exchange efficiency in the recuperator associated with a gas turbine. First, numerical simulations of the high-temperature and low-temperature channels are performed and, the calculated results are compared with experimental data (to verify the reliability of the numerical method). Second, the flow field structure of the low-temperature side channel is critically analyzed, leading to the conclusion that the flow velocity distribution in the low-temperature side channel is uneven, and its resistance is significantly higher than that in the high-temperature side. Therefore, five alternate structural schemes are proposed… More > Graphic Abstract

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.16, No.4, pp. 361-382, 2022, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.023851

Abstract The portal structure is the support equipment in the catenary, which bears the load of contact suspension and support equipment. In practical work, with the change of external forces, the support equipment bears complex and changeable loads, so it has higher requirements for its reliability and safety. In order to study the dynamic characteristics of catenary portal structure on continuous beam of four-way bridge, taking the catenary portal structure on Dshaping four-way bridge as the research object, the portal structure simulation model of bridge-network integration was established in Midas Civil. The maximum point of deformation and stress was determined by… More >

A Smooth Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization of Vibrational Structures for Natural Frequency and Dynamic Compliance

    Xiaoyan Teng1, Qiang Li1, Xudong Jiang2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.3, pp. 2479-2496, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.023110

Abstract A smooth bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization (SBESO), as a bidirectional version of SESO is proposed to solve the topological optimization of vibrating continuum structures for natural frequencies and dynamic compliance under the transient load. A weighted function is introduced to regulate the mass and stiffness matrix of an element, which has the inefficient element gradually removed from the design domain as if it were undergoing damage. Aiming at maximizing the natural frequency of a structure, the frequency optimization formulation is proposed using the SBESO technique. The effects of various weight functions including constant, linear and sine functions on structural optimization… More >

Developments and Applications of Neutrosophic Theory in Civil Engineering Fields: A Review

    Zhenhan Zhang, Jun Ye*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.2, pp. 887-916, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.022961

Abstract Neutrosophic theory can effectively and reasonably express indeterminate, inconsistent, and incomplete information. Since Smarandache proposed the neutrosophic theory in 1998, neutrosophic theory and related research have been developed and applied to many important fields. Indeterminacy and fuzziness are one of the main research issues in the field of civil engineering. Therefore, the neutrosophic theory is very suitable for modeling and applications of civil engineering fields. This review paper mainly describes the recent developments and applications of neutrosophic theory in four important research areas of civil engineering: the neutrosophic decision-making theory and applied methods, the neutrosophic evaluation methods and applications of… More >

A Modified Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization Procedure with Variable Evolutionary Volume Ratio Applied to Multi-Objective Topology Optimization Problem

    Xudong Jiang1,*, Jiaqi Ma1, Xiaoyan Teng2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.1, pp. 511-526, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.022785

Abstract Natural frequency and dynamic stiffness under transient loading are two key performances for structural design related to automotive, aviation and construction industries. This article aims to tackle the multi-objective topological optimization problem considering dynamic stiffness and natural frequency using modified version of bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO). The conventional BESO is provided with constant evolutionary volume ratio (EVR), whereas low EVR greatly retards the optimization process and high EVR improperly removes the efficient elements. To address the issue, the modified BESO with variable EVR is introduced. To compromise the natural frequency and the dynamic stiffness, a weighting scheme of sensitivity… More >

Shape and Size Optimization of Truss Structures under Frequency Constraints Based on Hybrid Sine Cosine Firefly Algorithm

Ran Tao, Xiaomeng Yang, Huanlin Zhou*, Zeng Meng*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.134, No.1, pp. 405-428, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020824

Abstract Shape and size optimization with frequency constraints is a highly nonlinear problem with mixed design variables, non-convex search space, and multiple local optima. Therefore, a hybrid sine cosine firefly algorithm (HSCFA) is proposed to acquire more accurate solutions with less finite element analysis. The full attraction model of firefly algorithm (FA) is analyzed, and the factors that affect its computational efficiency and accuracy are revealed. A modified FA with simplified attraction model and adaptive parameter of sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is proposed to reduce the computational complexity and enhance the convergence rate. Then, the population is classified, and different populations… More >

An Efficient Differential Evolution for Truss Sizing Optimization Using AdaBoost Classifier

    Tran-Hieu Nguyen*, Anh-Tuan Vu

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.134, No.1, pp. 429-458, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020819

Abstract Design constraints verification is the most computationally expensive task in evolutionary structural optimization due to a large number of structural analyses that must be conducted. Building a surrogate model to approximate the behavior of structures instead of the exact structural analyses is a possible solution to tackle this problem. However, most existing surrogate models have been designed based on regression techniques. This paper proposes a novel method, called CaDE, which adopts a machine learning classification technique for enhancing the performance of the Differential Evolution (DE) optimization. The proposed method is separated into two stages. During the first optimization stage, the… More >

João Pedro Ceniz, Rodrigo de Sá Martins, Marco Antonio Luersen*, Tiago Cousseau

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.133, No.3, pp. 601-618, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.021011

Abstract Ore conveyor belt rollers operate in harsh environments, making them prone to premature failure. Their service lives are highly dependent on the stress field and bearing misalignment angle, for which limit values are defined in a standard. In this work, an optimization methodology using metamodels based on radial basis functions is implemented to reduce the mass of two models of rollers. From a structural point of view, one of the rollers is made completely of metal, while the other also has some components made of polymeric material. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a parametric structural… More >
