Forced Vibrations of a System Consisting of a Pre-strained Highly Elastic Plate under Compressible Viscous Fluid Loading

    S. D. Akbarov1,2, M. I. Ismailov3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.97, No.4, pp. 359-390, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.097.359

Abstract The forced vibration of the system consisting of the pre-stretched plate made of highly-elastic material and half-plane filled by barotropic compressible Newtonian viscous fluid is considered. It is assumed that this forced vibration is caused by the lineal located time-harmonic force acting on the free face plane of the plate. The motion of the pre-stretched plate is written by utilizing of the linearized exact equations of the theory of elastic waves in the initially stressed bodies, but the motion of the compressible viscous fluid is described by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. The elastic relations of the plate material are described… More >

Vertical Vibrations of an Elastic Foundation with Arbitrary Embedment within a Transversely Isotropic, Layered Soil

    J. Labaki1, E. Mesquita2, R. K. N. D. Rajapakse3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.103, No.5, pp. 281-313, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.103.281

Abstract This paper introduces a numerical model to investigate the vibratory response of elastic and rigid circular plates embedded in viscoelastic, transversely isotropic, three-dimensional layered media. In the present numerical scheme, the boundary-value problem corresponding to the case of time-harmonic concentrated and distributed axisymmetric vertical ring loads within a layered half-space is formulated according to an exact stiffness method. Its solution results in the required influence functions for the modeling of the present problem. The case of an embedded flexible plate is formulated in terms of a variational method. The deflection profile of the plate is written in terms of generalized… More >

Exact Elasticity Solution for Natural Frequencies of Functionally Graded Simply-supported Structures

    S. Brischetto1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.95, No.5, pp. 391-430, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.095.391

Abstract This paper gives an exact three-dimensional elastic model for the free vibration analysis of functionally graded one-layered and sandwich simply-supported plates and shells. An exact elasticity solution is proposed for the differential equations of equilibrium written in general orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The equations consider a geometry for shells without simplifications, and allow the analysis of the cases of spherical shell panels, cylindrical shell panels, cylindrical closed shells and plates. The main novelty is the possibility of a general formulation for these geometries. The coefficients in equilibrium equations depend on the thickness coordinate because of the radii of curvature for the… More >

Vibrations of In-Plane Non-Constant Inward and Outward Rotating Beams

    Shueei-Muh Lin1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.52, No.1, pp. 105-124, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.052.105

Abstract In this study, the mathematical model of a non-constant rotating beam is established. It is an in-plane moving mass problem. Due to the effect of non-constant rotation, this model is composed of a governing differential equation with time-dependent coefficients and forcing term and three homogenous boundary conditions and one non-homogeneous boundary condition with time-dependent coefficients and forcing term. It is basically different to the system with constant rotation speed [Lin, 2008] and the linear moving beam system [Lin, 2009]. Obviously, a moving mass problem with time-dependent coefficients and forcing term is very complicated. A new solution method is here developed… More >

    M.M. Kaminski

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.80, No.2, pp. 113-140, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.080.113

Abstract The main aim of this work is to demonstrate a solution to the transient problems for the statistically homogeneous media with random physical parameters. This is done with the use of the stochastic perturbation technique based on the general order Taylor series expansions and the additionally modified implementation of the Finite Element Method. Now, both the Direct Differentiation Method as well as the Response Function Method are employed to form and solve up to the nth order state equations. Computational implementation of both approaches is illustrated using two examples - by determination of the probabilistic moments of the temperature histories… More >

Variable Kinematics and Advanced Variational Statements for Free Vibrations Analysis of Piezoelectric Plates and Shells

    E. Carrera, S. Brischetto1, M. Cinefra2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.65, No.3, pp. 259-342, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.065.259

Abstract This paper investigates the problem of free vibrations of multilayered plates and shells embedding anisotropic and thickness polarized piezoelectric layers. Carrera's Unified Formulation (CUF) has been employed to implement a large variety of electro-mechanical plate/shell theories. So-called Equivalent Single Layer and Layer Wise variable descriptions are employed for mechanical and electrical variables;linear to fourth order expansions are used in the thickness direction z in terms of power of z or Legendre polynomials. Various forms are considered for the Principle of Virtual Displacements (PVD) and Reissner's Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT) to derive consistent differential electro-mechanical governing equations. The effect of electro-mechanical… More >

    Sharnappa1, N. Ganesan2, Raju Sethuraman3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.18, No.2, pp. 121-144, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.018.121

Abstract This article presents the study on buckling and free vibration behavior of sandwich general shells of revolution under thermal environment using Wilkins theory. The temperature assumes to be uniform over the shell structure. The numerical analysis is based on the semi-analytical finite element method applicable to thick shells. The analysis is carried out for different geometry such as truncated conical and hemispherical shells with various facing and core materials under clamped-clamped boundary condition. The parametric study is carried out for different core to facing (tc / tf) thickness ratio by considering the temperature dependent and independent material properties of the… More >

Vibrations of Cracked Euler-Bernoulli Beams using Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Method

    U. Andreaus1,3, R.C. Batra2, M. Porfiri2, 3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 111-132, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.009.111

Abstract Structural health monitoring techniques based on vibration data have received increasing attention in recent years. Since the measured modal characteristics and the transient motion of a beam exhibit low sensitivity to damage, numerical techniques for accurately computing vibration characteristics are needed. Here we use a Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method to analyze vibrations of a beam with multiple cracks. The trial and the test functions are constructed using the Generalized Moving Least Squares (GMLS) approximation. The smoothness of the GMLS basis functions requires the use of special techniques to account for the slope discontinuities at the crack locations. Therefore, a… More >

Free and Forced Vibrations of Thick Rectangular Plates using Higher-Order Shear and Normal Deformable Plate Theory and Meshless Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Method

    L. F. Qian1,2, R. C. Batra3, L. M. Chen1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.5, pp. 519-534, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.519

Abstract We use a meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method to analyze three-dimensional infinitesimal elastodynamic deformations of a homogeneous rectangular plate subjected to different edge conditions. We employ a higher-order plate theory in which both transverse shear and transverse normal deformations are considered. Natural frequencies and the transient response to external loads have been computed for isotropic and orthotropic plates. Computed results are found to agree with those obtained from the analysis of the 3-dimensional problem either analytically or by the finite element method. More >

Impact of the Vibrations on Soret Separation in Binary and Ternary Mixtures

    S. Srinivasan1, M. Z. Saghir1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 201-216, 2011, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2011.007.201

Abstract CFD simulations have been made to understand the impact of the vibrations of the ISS on the thermodiffusion process. Simulations were made for two ternary hydrocarbon mixtures and one binary associated mixture. While one of the ternary mixture was at a pressure of 35 MPa, the second ternary mixture as well as the binary mixture were at a pressure of 0.101325 MPa. The analysis of the results showed that imposing the ISS vibrations had a profound effect on the Soret effect in all three systems. More precisely, in all three mixtures, a single convective flow cell is established. Such a… More >
