Study on Flame Shape and Induced Wind Velocity in Inclined Tunnel Fires with One Portal Sealed

    Shengzhong Zhao1, Daiyan Chen1, Han Zhang1,2,*, Junhao Yu1, Lin Xu1, Zhaoyi Zhuang1, Fei Wang1,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.6, pp. 1907-1932, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.071910 - 31 December 2025

Abstract A sealed portal could significantly alter the flame shape and smoke flow characteristics in inclined tunnel fires. In inclined tunnels, two typical sealing conditions could be defined, namely the upper portal sealed and the lower portal sealed. In this study, the effects of tunnel slope on flame shape, flame length, along with smoke mass flow rate and induced velocity at the tunnel portal, are numerically investigated. The results show that, in all scenarios, flames initially rise vertically but tilt toward the sealed portal during the quasi-steady stage, with the largest tilt angle observed in tunnels… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.8, pp. 2027-2046, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2025.067678 - 12 September 2025

Abstract Atrium spaces, common in modern construction, provide significant fire safety challenges due to their large vertical openings, which facilitate rapid smoke spread and reduce sprinkler effectiveness. Traditional smoke management systems primarily rely on make-up air to replace the air expelled through vents. Inadequate calibration, particularly with air velocity, can worsen fire conditions by enhancing oxygen supply, increasing soot production, and reducing visibility, so endangering safe evacuation. This study investigates the impact of make-up air velocity on smoke behaviour in atrium environments through 24 simulations performed using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Scenarios include various fire… More >

Impact of Varying Blower Opening Degrees on Indoor Environment and Thermal Comfort

    Shengqiang Shi1,2,*, Abdelatif Merabtine3, Rachid Bennacer4, Julien Kauffmann2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.8, pp. 1703-1716, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.050547 - 06 August 2024

Abstract At present, air handling units are usually used indoors to improve the indoor environment quality. However, while introducing fresh air to improve air quality, air velocity has a certain impact on the occupants’ thermal comfort. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the optimization of air-fluid-body interaction dynamics. In this study, the indoor air flow was changed by changing the opening and closing degree of the blower, and the thermal manikin is introduced to objectively evaluate the human thermal comfort under different air velocities. The main experimental results show that the air change rate increases with… More >

HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN DRYING OF CARROT BY RADIO FREQUENCY ASSISTED HEAT PUMP DRYING

Le Anh Duca , Pham Van Kienb,*, Nguyen Thanh Tanb, Doan Thanh Sonb, Nhanh Van Nguyenc, Ngoc Xuan Nguyend

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.20, pp. 1-6, 2023, DOI:10.5098/hmt.20.25

Abstract This study focused on the heat and mass transfer in radio (RF) assisted heat pump (HP) drying of carrots. The experimental drying of carrot by RF assisted HP drying method was conducted to evaluate the effect of RF power on drying efficiency including drying rate and heating rate. The input drying parameters were drying air temperature of 45oC, drying air velocity of 2.5 m/s and RF power of 0, 0.5 and 1.5 kW, in which, RF power of 0 was corresponding to HP drying method. The experimental drying results showed that in RF assisted HP… More >
